Fin, Fur and Feather Study Chemical, Brush Control Results Recently, more than 200 men from over the United States and Canada attended the Right-of-Way Chemical Brush Control Conference at The Pennsylvania State Univer- sity. They represented highway de- partments, forest and wildlife con- servation agencies, utility compan- jes, companies manufacturing chem- jcals, and companies whose crews keep rights-of-way clear of high vegetation. Members of the Game Commission's research staff were in attendance. The highlight of the conference was e field trip to inspect the three- mile strip of 200-foot right-of-way crossing State Game Lands near Philipsburg. This 75-acre test area demonstrates the results of five dif- ferent treatments for brush control, the express purpose of which was to determine their relative values for wildlife. The experiment is in its third year, under the direction of Dr. William C. Bramble, The Pennsylvania State University. Co- operating in this study are the Pennsylvania Game Commission, The Pennsylvania Electric Company, the American Chemical Paint Com- pany, The DuPont Chemical Com- pany, and the Asplundh Tree Expert Company. The consensus of opinion follow- ing the sessions was that selective basal spraying would produce the maximum of game food and cover, and yet be the cheapest method of brush control in the long run. Also, this selective method eliminates the unsightly brown lines produced by blanket foliage spraying and the re- sultant indiscriminate destruction of game food and cover plants. Should this method of brush treatment by chemicals prove out to the satisfaction of the utility com- panies and be put into use on the thousands of acres involved in the network of utility lines in Pennsyl- vania the benefits to wildlife in wooded areas would be tremendous. Commonplace Called Remarkable This account is from Game Pro- tector Robert H. Sphar, Philipsburg, Centre County, who says: “It often takes someone else to call our at- tention to wonders we see every day and take for granted. Last month my dad visited me. Early one morning he accompanied me to check my fox sets on State Game Lands No. 60. Seeing wildlife there, day efter day, is commonplace to me. It was my ded’s remark that can easily result when these mater- jals are picked up with feed and get in the digestive tract of the animals. 0 = agricultural engineer.
