The Kunkle and Harveys Lake
Fire Departments did a grand job
in responding to the calls sent in
Johnson property got out of con-
trol last Friday afternoon.
Capt. and Mrs. Robert Schaw are
with Mrs. Schaw’s mother, Mrs.
Mary Downs, for a visit before re-
porting to Uncle Sam for reassign-
ment. :

Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Garinger
entertained on Sunday evening Mr.
and Mrs. Warren Smith and Mr.
Alpha Smith of New York; Mr. and
Mrs. Harold Kline and children of
Kingston; Miss Jacqueline Albert of
Lebanon; Arnold Garinger and Miss
Lina ‘Garinger. Mr. and Mrs. Ar-
thur Austin of Johnson City, N. Y.,
called during the evening.
Mrs. Lee Shepperson and daugh-
ter Peggy of Danville, spent the
weekend with her parents, Mr. and
Mrs. Howard Higgins.
Herman Garinger returned from
General Hospital on Monday.

Back Mountain Town and Coun-
try YMCA was host to the North-
east Pennsylvania District A. O. S.
at Back Mountain YMCA on Febru-
ary 2.
Leland Johnson, executive secre-
tary of the Memorial Branch YMCA
conducted the opening devotions.
W. Haines Kent, state secretary of
YMCA'’s, was speaker for the morn-
ing and afternoon sessions.
The noon luncheon was served by
members of Westmoreland Tri Hi-Y
Club.
Secretaries from Scranton, Hazle-
ton, Freeland and Wilkes-Barre at-
tended.
Group discussions were held by
the Membership Secretaries, Physi-
cal Education Directors, Program
Secretaries and General Secretaries.
Grass Fire At Myers’
A grass fire at the C. L. Myers
place, Overbrook Road, was extin-
guished by Dr. Henry M. Laing Fire
Company last Tuesday at 2:30.

At School After Injury
Kitty Lamoreaux, eleven year old
daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Carl
Lamoreaux, Kunkle, returned to
school at Dallas-Franklin Tuesday
morning after five weeks absence.
She was discharged from Nesbitt
Memorial Hospital a week ago Wed-
nesday, after spending over three
weeks there as a patient, result of
a coasting accident in front of her
house.
Kitty has a stiff elbow to show
for her experience, but her eye is
all right and her bruises healed.
She wants to thank everybody who
sent her flowers and games and
books and candy while she was
laid up.

whose expressions of sympathy
lightened the burden during the
long illness and death of their wife
and mother.

Dallas-Franklin Students
Collect $1555 In Drive
Dallas - Franklin Township high
school students collected $1555.50
in its recently completed magazine
subscription drive, as against an
estimated goal of $1200. Mrs. Mary
Emmanuel’s seventh grade turned
in the highest home-room score.
Danny Richards collected $102,
winning first prize for the second
year in a row. He selected a table
radio, having won a flash camera
last year. Geraldine Miller, with
$70.30, won a flash camera.
Students who collected over $30
were: Barry Landmesser, Walter
Williams, Mary Jo Kashuba, An-
drew Stasko, Carl Ide. Clifton Wil-
liams, Janet Moore, Jay Elston,
Anne Dorrance, William Schlittler
and James Finn.
The student body votes on what
to do with the profits from the
Curtis Publishing Company sale. It
is ordinarily used for equipment or
materials which the entire school
can enjoy. .

Shakalum Leaves
Naval Service
Paul C. Shakalum, radio man
third class, has been separated from
naval service at the Naval Air Sta-
tion at Pensacola, Florida.
Shakalum, a reservist, was called
to duty on the aircraft carrier Mon-
terey on May 10, 1952.
He attended Radio School in
Norfolk, Va., where he was pro-
moted to radio man third class.
While in service he visited ports
in Haiti and Cuba.
He is a former resident of Shav-
ertown and a graduate of West-
moreland High School in the class
of 1945.
He is the son of Mrs. Mary Sha-
kalum of Park Avenue, Wilkes 1
