Stretch Hay Supply—Feed only
small amounts of hay at each feed-
ing, small enough that you know
a cow will clean, it up, say Penn
State extension dairy specialists.
Then feed hay oftener, at least
three times a day. Four or five hay
feedings would be better. Dairymen
short of hay can stretch the sup-
ply by reducing waste.
Store Root Crops—A storage cel-
lar is the ideal place to keep root
crops. However, they can be stored
in a trench lodated in a spot ‘that
is well drained and where water
will not accumulate. Cover with al-
tennate layers of straw or hay and
soil,
4-H Club Work Helps—Allen L.
Baker, State 4-H Club leader at
the Pennsylvania State College, be-
lieves that the 4-H clubs have
made their influence felt in edu-
cation for farming, homemaking,
and rural community life through
projects the members carry.
Wool Marketed—Almost 800,000
pounds of wool were marketed co-
operatively by 28 pools in Penn-
sylvania this year, This figure does
not include wool produced by far-
mers who did not sell through pools.
Feed Grain in Litter— When grain
is fed in the litter, the hens not
only get exercise but their scratch-
ing keeps the litter stirred.
Ventilate Barns—TWwo reasons for
forced ventilation of dairy barns are
given by Joseph ‘McCurdy, Penn
State extension lagricultural en-
gineer. He says ‘that barns are
tighter and more comfortable than
formerly and the cows lare bigger.
A big cow gives off more moisture
than a small cow.

Big Crowd At
Coon Farm Sale
Brisk Bidding For
Farm Equipment .
A big crowd attended the public
sale of farm equipment, cows and
stock at the Harvey F. Coon farm,
Wyoming RD 3 on Saturday after-
noon.
In spite of’ “unpleasant weather
and a dull day, bidding was brisk.
A Farmall M Tractor, twelve years
old, brought $1,200. A grade cow
brought the top price of $400.
The sale started at 12:30 with
Howard Sands as auctioneer and
Ralph Sands as sales manager.
Shortly after four there was a
downpour of rain but it failed to
dampen the spirit of the crowd
which stayed on until after 5 to
buy the cattle which were auc-
tioned under the electric lights.
Until the illness of Mr. Coon,
who has been bedfast for several
months but is now much improved,
the Coon farm has been one of the
outstanding potato producers in the
Carverton area. Frequently the har-
vest has been as high as 5,000
bushels. Another big truck crop
has been cabbage.
