It is the easiest and cheapest form of plant disease control. Avoid Too Much Lime—Too much hydrated lime used in drying litter for baby chicks can cause , irritation of the feet, inflammation of the respiratory system, and even death of the chicks. Save Wheat from Loss—Winter wheat can now be sown safely in nearly all sections of Pennsylvania without danger of loss caused by the Hessian fly. Fly-free dates are grouped around the last of Septem- ber and the first of October. Make New Lawn Now—Fall is the best time to start the new lawn. A good lawn requires top- soil, at least 4 inches thick and preferably 6 inches, Fill in the rough grade with subsoil up to within 6 inches of the grade de- sired and then fill with topsoil. Feed New Grain Slowly—If small amounts of new grain are fed the | first few days and increased grad- i ually over several weeks, the di- | gestive systems of poultry will be- come accustomed to the new grain | without trouble. Plan Rat Control—Screen and ratproof corn cribs before the corn crop is put in them. Also, plan now to kill rats on the premises with mixed red squill and meat bait later in the fall. Experience told the sad tale Sat- urday as the Green and Gold of Avoca took the measure of Dallas Township Redskins, 18-6. It was Avoca all the way, with Dallas on the receiving end in all but the third quarter, when they finally began clicking and scored their only touchdown. The Red and White started a drive in the latter part of the third period, highlighted by a pass from Bloomer to Redmond good for 30 yards, but Avoca intercepted an-! other pass to temporarily halt the Redskins drive. Dallas refused to give in and in the last quarter Bloomer broke through and blocked THE POST, FRIDAY, OCTOBER 8, 1948 last year’s squad. A number of fumbles combined with some costly penalties kept Dallas in their own territory most of the game. Putting the entire squad through a hard workout this week, coach Tom Edwards is preparing to give West Pittston a battle tommorrow afternoon. Although the Green and White of Pittston are odds on favor- ites, the Redskins, with a few games under their belts, ‘might prove a little tougher than expected. Dallas will be playing their last home game for the next three weeks and are out to hand the West Pittston lads a surprise and to atone for last week's setback. _ Unable to decipher the Kingston Township passing attack, a scrappy Lehman team bowed in defeat 18- 0 last Saturday night at Kingston Stadium before 450 fans. While the Red and Blue more than held their own on the ground, Kaytee’s end Dick Handley roamed at will through the Lehman secondary and was on the receiving end of three, touchdown passes. With the teams going all out to win, the tackling and blocking was clean and hard on both sides, and a more evenly matched contest than the score seems to indicate was played. Kaytee‘s first touch- down came in the second quarter, an Avoca punt and Flanagan re- covered for Dallas on the Avoca five. A penalty moved the ball to the two where Rosser Cooke crash- ed off-tackle for the score. Avoca was led by Clifford, who! made a 50 yard sprint through the whole Dallas team on an off-tackle slant, and seven other veterans of When To Plant—Spring, not fall, is the best time to plant straw- berries in Pennsylvania.
