NORBECK Any boy or girl between the ages of ten and twenty who is interested in a 4-H Calf Club is invited to at- tend our first meeting, to be held at Bill Dagostin’s of Sugarloaf on February 20th at 8 P. M. Luzerne County is not considered a great Dairy County, but the farm- ers derive the greatest share of their income from the dairy in- dustry. At the present time we have many good registered dairy herds, but we would like to see more in the County. It is one of the aims of the Luzerne County Agricultural Extension Association to help improve the dairy herds in all sections of the County. At the present time we are plan- ning to start one or two 4-H Calf Clubs in the County to help build up our herds. A calf project is of three years’ duration, starting with a small calf and continuing until the animal has milked one year. A calf club member is asked to start with a pure bred registered heifér calf of any dairy breed. The calf must be out of a tuberculosis and bangs-free dam, which produced at least 400 pounds of butterfat, and should be of good dairy type. The members are required to keep feed and growth records for a three- year period. We have one meeting a month at which time we will discuss calf-feeding, fitting and gen- eral dairy problems. At each meet- ing we will have games and a recre- ation period. At the end of the year the club will have a round-up, at which time the calves will be judged on fitting and type, and the best calves will be entered in the Pennsylvania State Farm Show. If any boys and girls of other sections of the County are interested in becoming 4-H Club members in any line of Agricultural work, either contact your local 4-H Club leader in your Community or drop a card to C. C. Norberck, Assistant County Agent, 5 Water Street, Wilkes-Barre. ; = : = STATE POLICE SAY: When you clean freshly ™ fallen snow off the windshield of your car—don’t forget to clear the back window at the same time. S| SAFETY VALVE... —& (Continued from Page Two) Many great men have been handi- capped by liquor. Stephen Foster never lived to compose his best song; Stephen Douglas never gave his best lecture. Charles Lamb, Robert Burns, Edgar Alan Poe, Cole- ridge and others never gave the world their best literary work — drink stole it. Liquor never built a cottage nor grew a garden there with flowers fair. It never inspired a kiss of purity and love that challenged service to God above. It never made a contented-hearthstone but breeds the divorces of the home. It triumphs in disease, blows, brawls and hate; tramples on the flowers, strikes hinges from the gate. It never stuffed a hungry little brutal act. It never gave a child happy anticipation, only brought de- cay to home and nation. It deals in fear, evictions and mortgages, and then demands some more.
