But the secret of effectiveness in trimmings lies in the home-sewer in her enthusiasm to obtain the professional look ruins the garment by overtrimming. A safe rule to follow is that of sim- plicity. One touch of trimming is usually all that is necessary. Appliqué, arrowheads, bands, beading, bows, hemstitching or fagoting give the dress the center of interest so necessary to smart clothes. The de- cision on where and when to use trimming must be based upon the design of the dress itself. Simple designs with very few cuts are the best background for trimming. Appliqué makes an attractive trimming on children’s clothes, aprons, pillows, luncheon sets and novelties. It is done with pieces of material cut in interesting shapes, or with designs cut from figured fabrics such as chintz. Fabric ap- pliqué designs can be found in the pattern or needlework catalogues. Flowers and other designs can be cut from figured fabrics. These must have an allowance of 1%” to 14” all around. After’ cutting out the design of appliqué in fabric, turn all raw edges on to the wrong side the amount of the allowance. Baste. Press. Remove bastings. If the pieces of appliqué are large enough to handle easily on the machine, stitch all around the raw edge the width of the allowance. Turn the raw edge to the wrong side. along the line of stitching. Crease and press. Place the design on the dress where it is to be used for trimming. Pin in place and study the effect. When it has been placed exactly right, baste. Fabric appliqués may be finished in three ways: (1) with a tiny blanket stitch; (2) by slip stitching the folded edge so that no stitches show; (3) by couching. An example of decorative ap- pliqué is this garden .apron. The pliquéd — and the plaid flowers match the trim across the deep pockets. You can carry all your gardening equipment—seeds, bulbs, spade, gloves, etc.—in the pockets within hand’s reach. Why not try Your skill at appliqué — starting with this apron?
