PAGE SIX BASKETBALL ECHOES By Larry Dallas Borough and Dallas Township, first teams to play off the February 21 games cancelled by Old Man Winter, battled to the inevitable conclusion Tuesday evening. Borough had previously cinched its undefeated position by trouncing KT, last obstacle on its march to glittering heights. Boy’s Standings Team WwW L % Boro. 10 © 1000 Harter 6 3 666 KT 5d. KT, evidently convinced of defeat toward the end and wishing to give its younger players some experience, also used everybody but the score- keeper. The total of 26 contest- ants amassed 48 fouls between them. Boline, as usual, led KT with 13 counters. ‘Kocher came through for Borough to roll up 13 pointers. Harter Harries Dallas Harter, slightly off form, could only roll up 32 points against Town- ship, but this was more than en- ough to beat the local lads 9. Junevitz had 14 counts to pace Harter while the best Dallas could show was 6 tallies by Flower. Lehman Takes Lake Lehman, enjoying a good night and a 130-10 half-time score, played a scorers battle with Lake, com- ing out on the big end of a 56-38 final score. Westley had 25 points to cop honors for the game. Milaus- kus wias in tthe follow up position with 24. Major, who looked good in the Harter game at the beginning of the season and then faded, re- found himself Friday to the tune of 15 tallies. Both teams, out for the win, played their starting line-ups to the end of the game. Girl's Games Borough girls, able to beat any team ‘in the league by their own say so, pulled a 41437 triumph out of their fracas with KT Friday. Spaciano took honors for the game with 18 counts. Laketon, in a nip and tuck tussle with Lehman, went home ‘with a 25-24 win. The kind -of basketball that makes the fans shout them- selves hoarse, bite their nails to the quick and come back next time. Harter didn’t beat Dallas Town- ship by a 28-17 decision. Race lacked 2 points of making as many counts as the entire Harter squad. Frace had 9 for the losers. Final Games In the game with the fore ordain- ed ending Boro beat Township 49- 15 Tuesday evening on the losers floor. With Tondora held to 1 bucket, Fowler was high for Town- ship with 7 counts. Kocher repeat- ed his Friday night performance to lead Boro with 13. Borough girls won over the Town- ship lassies by 32-27. This is not the highest score the Township girls have compiled, but the close score indicates it was one of their best games. Tunkhannock Over Lehman Tunkhannock, a hot team in its own league, took over the Lehman Scotties, 35-30, Tuesday evening after a see-saw battle which saw Lehman ahead going into the last quarter. ‘Scottie JVs mopped up their Tunkhannock counterparts by a 24- 21 decision. Church Tilt There ‘will be a three way (Church league tilt at Lehman gymnasium Wednesday, evening. [Proceeds to go to the Men’s Bible Classes of Lehman and Meeker. Games will follow the Ibig supper being put on by Lehman Methodist Church and will afford an opportunity to relax after the meal and enjoy some good sport. The Year’s Best Game Best game of the year is being held tonight on the Dallas Boro. floor, starting at 7:30. When we say best game we mean just that. You all heard of the accident Joe LeGrand jsuffered, probably lots of you know the likeable boy person- ally. Tonight’s action is in the form of a benefit for Joe, to help defray hospital and doctor expenses and to show that his friends will not let him down. Joe is expected home from the Wills Eye Hospital this weekend but won’t be here to see the Amer- ican Legion and the Boro quintet tangle; in what promises to be a good game. For added enjoyment Boro girls will risk their undefeated reputation at the hands of the Lehman Alumni team. Tickets are on sale at LeGrand’s Restaurant and other stores. They can also be purchased from stu- dents. Purchase of a ticket does not obligate you to be at the game, but be there if you can. Let’s make it a big night for Joey. Last Minute Correction om r————_— Just as we were about to lock up the forms news filtered in that the Joey LeGrand game had been postponed. A check with the school, where flu had 73 students out Thursday morning, confirmed the rumor. the earliest convenient date. This gives you more time to buy your ticket, which will still be good whenever the game takes place. Going To Build? From Pillar To Post (Continued from Page One) = S| of nursery rhymes, nonsense rhymes and folk-songs. There is a song about the chick- adees, sung by my grandmother to an imposing number of grands and greatgrands as well as to eleven children of her own. There was another chickadee song, fairly common, which we hlave in its en- tirety, the one that starts out with “Twenty little chickadees standing in a row, Twenty pairs of naked feet buried in the snow.” The rarer specimen of IChickadee-ana features a small child observing chickadees through the kitchen window, and deploring their lack of warm clothing. In one of the lines she begs her mother to find stockings and shoes for the little chickadees, and the refrain goes like this: iChickadee-dee, chickadee-dee, Merrily singing his Chickadee-dee. There is another song, rendered lugubriously by my grandmother, which is considerably more robust in character than ditties about the chickadees, though it does embody the sentiments lying hidden behind the bees and ‘the birds and the flowers. This song sets forth the tale of the old woman from some- where or other, exact locality shrouded in a lapse of memory, who “loved her Old Man dearly, But another one twice as «well.”* Wish- ing to rid herself of her spouse, she led him %o the Old Mill and in- vited him ito jump in the lake. CITIES SERVICE GASOLINE—OILS Jack Hazeltine's AUTO SERVICE Phone 274-R-9 ‘ MAIN STREET Dallas, Pa. THE POST, FRIDAY, MARCH 7, 1947 canny soul, and spurred by des- peration, her husband leaped nimb- ly to one side as he was being as- sisted toward his doom by a boot | from the rear, and his wife “went headlong in.” “Then she began to holler because she could not swim, He goes and cuts a great long pole And pushes her farther in.” A few lines later on fin this mas- terpiece we find the Turned Worm turning his back upon her pleas for help with the remark, “My dear my darling wife, I can’t see you at all.” And presently there he goes, es up the hill from the old | mill, singing at the top of his lungs, “Sing didry-aye, sing didry-eye, sing didry-andry-o.” This happy outcome usually co- incided with the finishing thump given to a mound of dough on the | bread board, and the deft shaping of loaves for the morning’s baking. Especially loud thumps emphasized the recurring refrain at the end of each stanza, and a resounding whack when the great long pole came into action. The song has a universal appeal. Most of us have yearned, at one rm time or another and sometimes fre- quently, to lead somebody to the Mill: Pond by a reluctant ear and invite him to take himself a swim, and we have indulged in rosy but forbidden visions of expediting matters with a great long pole. The singing of this ballad lets off steam without being followed by a guilty conscience, or the necessity for crouching on the bank for hours after the blowoff and administering artificial respiration in a belated attempt to foil the electric chair, There must be somebody in the | community who can remember all of the stanzas, It was common — g = knowledge in the western part of New York State at ‘the time of the War Between the (States, and New York State is the right next door to Pennsylvania.
