7 4 Na Memory Of Gallant Fox Terrier ~ Will Be Perpetuated At Show Among the silver-plated trophies to be awarded at the Back Moun- 7 tain Kennel Club Dog Show Sunday at Kingston Armory is one—a large plain plate except for a gadroon edge—engraved with the following legend: “Best of Variety, iSmooth-in loving memory of Bob Sawyer.” . The trophy is being given by Mr. and Mrs. Charles H. Bliem, Hazle- ton, in memory of their smooth fox terrier who died in a hospital in Garden City, Long Island, last sum- mer where the Bliems had taken him for treatment of what proved to be an incurable throat ailment. “Bob Sawyer” will be remem- bered as the terrier awarded ‘best in show’ at the Back Mountain Kennel (Club's first sanction match at Irem Temple Country Club on June 3, 1945, and it is especially ‘fitting that the memorial trophy will be offered for the dog mamed “best smooth fox terrier’ at the Club's first -point. show. ‘Bob Sawyer was a gallant dog and packed a wealth of experience in his short life. He was imported from England shortly before the United ' States entered the war by James Austin, president of the American Fox Terrier Club, On the way over Bob's ship was torpedoed. Sailors loaded Bob along with other human survivors in an open lifeboat and there they spent several days fto- gether on the open sea with Bob as good a sport and morale builder as any other passenger in the boat. , Later he was shown under Mr. Austin’s ownership for well over a year and used with considerable success in the stud before he was purchased by Mr. Bliem, it was Mr. Austin who offered the Bliems a final resting place for the body of their beloved pet. Bob Sawyer mow lies in Mr. Austin’s private canine cemetery at “Catawba Farms,” Mr. Austin’s Long Island Estate at Old Westbury. ; The Bliems count themselves fortunate in owning one of Bob Sawyers sons, born to ‘Hope Of Merricourt” on the day his daddy was awarded best of show -at Irem Temple Country Club, and ‘‘Sonny Jim Sawyer” is doing his best to fill his father’s place in the Bliem’s affections. It is also interesting that ‘Hope of Merricourt” is owned by Mrs. Louis McL. Cottle of Shavertown; and so the memory of Bob Sawyer and his rollicking son hold a firm spot in the affections of all mem- bers of Back Mountain Kenne] Club. ex Poling’s FOR SALE—PUPPIES ; (After November 20th) COCKER SPANIELS— (Registerable in A. Good yield: of high quality mean that soil and fertilizer supplied enough of this necessary plant food. Low yields and poor quality may have been due to lack of potash. Now is the time to re- view your fertilizer program and start making your plans for the next growing season. Have you had your soils tested? If not, ask your official agricul- tural adviser about such tests to see how much available pot- ash they contain. He also can tell you how much your soil and fertilizer must supply for the crops you intend to plant next year. THE POST, FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 15, 1946 whi Famous U. S.
