RR ————— 4 H ¥ a i 5 0 | | ‘remains, Employment Picture Brighter Except In Ten-County Area An optimistic picture of employ- ment conditions in Pennsylvania has been reported by the State office of the U. S. Employment Service which said that the unemployment peak in Pennsylvania has now been passed and that all ‘large-scale withdrawals from the labor market” have now been completed. However it was noted that those applying for jobs in any degree of concentration are centered in the ten-county area of Lackawanna, Lu- zerne; Columbia, Schuylkill, Mercer, Northumberland, Washington, Blair, Lawrence and Cambria where the unemployment rate is almost double that found elsewhere in the State. It is noteworthy that USES as- serted that the discharge rate of veterans is fast becoming a less important factor, whereas only a few months ago, the problem cre- ated by unemployed veterans was | considered serious. The fact still however, that most of’ those now unemployed are former "servicemen. It was pointed out that of approximately 1,500,000 veterans returned to civilian life, approxi- mately 800,000, or 70 per cent have found employment. This trend has been reflected in both unemployment compensation benefits paid to jobless Pennsylvan- ians and in payments to unem- ployed servicemen under terms of the Servicemen’s Readjustment Act.
