at / » od Hgnes Berry Explains Basketball Rules To Girls’ Teams At Clinic Designed to reduce dangerous playing which might result in phy- sical injury and to standardize of- ficiating at girls’ games, notoriously rough this year, a basketball clinic was held last Wednesday night at Kingston Township High School. Sponsored by the Back-Mountain League, it was conducted by Miss Agnes M. Berry, Wilkes-Barre, who is Wyoming Vialley’s foremost sports .official; About one hundred coaches, referees, players and supervising principals, representing every school in the Back-Mountain, and several non-Back-Mountain guests atten- ded. In a long talk before the group, Miss Berry, a National Board Of- ficial, pointed out the need for thorough knowledge of ithe rules and the use of proper terminology. Among the many rules that have been misinterpreted or ignored dur- ing the season were these important ones: . Body contact of any kind is a foul on the person committing it. Placing a hand on the ball while it is fully in possession of another person is a foul. If a girl is fouled while in the act of shooting, the basket is good, if made, and the player also gets two foul shots. On a foul try, the person shooting may elect to take the ball out of bounds instead. When the ball is not in the hands of the player, during dribbling or juggling, it is a free ball.” Time is not out during a foul try in girls’ games, but re- mains in through all the games, unless the referee stops the clock. Following her talk, a discussion of various problems, both of refer- ees and players, was held and many of the past disputes were settled. Each referee was given actual practice at a demonstration game that followed, in which teams from Dallas Borough, Laketon, Harter and Kingston Township partici- pated. “We reserve the right to limit quantities of any advertised merchandise, if, and when available” i 1 \ NABISCO sag i Milk Bone sviLLsizesdTiny airs BEE NABISCO Graham Crackers bis. 20€ ? Other- wise, ‘the standings remain exactly the same. Both ‘teams at Dallas Township are as yet undefeated, and need only to win one more game each to clinch first place honors. Two of the boys’ quintet’s toughest games are still to come up, how- Lehman, still without a victory, turned in another impressive re- cord Friday when the Scottie eagle- eyes sank eleven out of eleven foul shots. Stolarick, Lehman, still leads the boys with seventeen more points picked up in ‘the Dallas Township game while Shiner, Laketon, leads the girls. In ithe boys’ high scor- ing, Dallas Township has placed two on the Big Five, the first team to do so. The Skater’s Waltz would have been an appropriate theme for last weeks. Two of the floors, at Harter and Dallas Township, were newly waxed and hampered the players and officials alike. Girls’ games were far less rough than they had been, thanks to Miss Berry's basketball clinic Wednesday night, but some players were un- able ‘to strike a happy medium. In their fear of fouling, they played rather spiritlessly, making fouls much more of a bug-a-boo than they should be. KTHS By One Point Kingston Township led. Laketon by a marrow margin throughout the entire game and won by a single point-26-25. Scoring was evenly distributed among the players, with Walter Gulitus having twelve to make him the leading man.
