Bowling Notes
This week this column will be de-
voted to the forgotten man of bow-
ling, ‘the sponsor. He is called the
“forgotten man’ because the only
time most bowlers think of him is
at the beginning of the season when
the team captain makes his annual
visit to collect a check for the
league entry fee and to “put on the
bite for bowlers’ shirts. These
“angels” of bowlers will soon begin
wondering if the investment is
worthwhile.
Under present conditions in this
community, we must consider that
bowling teams are sponsored be-
cause. of friendship or whatever
good-will may be gained from the
bowling hall.
There are many fays in which
league members can let their spon-
sors know that they appreciate his
interest in bowling. If a bowler has
occasion to do business with a mer-
chant who has sponsored a team in
your league, he should let the mer-
chant know that he is given patron-
age because he has helped to make
the league possible. Make a prac-
tice of keeping in touch with the
sponsor. Let him know how the
league is going, how many games
his team has won. Invite him down
to watch his team bowl, let him
get acquainted with the other mem-
bers of the team and make him feel
that the team wants him to have a
personal interest in the team and
its progress.
What we are driving at is the
fact that the bowlers are definitely
on the spot and must devise ways
| and means of assuring themselves
that their sponsor is firmly sold on
the idea that his investment in a

implies and not just a gesture of
good-will. He must be made to
realize that he is helping to make
the game possible and that his in-
terest extends to every member of
the league who will pledge himself
to patronize a sponsor whenever
possible.
So let’s all resolve now to take
the sponsor out of the ‘forgotten
man” class and honor him for what
he really is—a real sport, devoted
to a real sport and its progress.
This season our leagues have the
sponsor in mind by donating a tro-
phy to the winning team sponsors.
But make it a practice to look him
up occasionally.
