| ~ Sa > ~~ a SS x er fine performances, NOVEMBER 18, 1938 AGE Jpee LEHMAN AND KINGSTON TOWNSHIP TIED FOR LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIP Yio And Harvard Meet In Gridiron Classic Tomorrow Cornell, Penn And Navy To Be Idle Until Turkey Day Tilts SEASON NEARS END | As the big time gnidiron season nears its close, traditional games en- liven the schedules but this Saturday relatively | few outstanding games will be played because most of the nation’s top notch teams will be marking time in anticipation of classic Thanksgiving Day tilts. Headliners in the East this week- end are the time-honored Yale-Har- vard contest, Columbia’s game with the erratic but powerful Orange from Syracuse, the renewal of relationship between Army and Princeton, and the Fordham-South Carolina struggle. ~ Judging from past records alone (and by what other medium shall ye know them) the Crimson footballers should humble the Yales in the New| / Haven bowl However, anything can happen between these two oldest ri- vals of the Big Thrée, and pari-mut- ual odds don’t mean a thing. Certain, though, is the fact that a very fine and well drilled Harvard eleven, which found itself in the game with Prince- ton, will meet a Yale team possessing very little else beyond courage. Passing Duel Forecast The Columbia-Syracuse game should resolve into a duel between two of the ablest passers in the Bast, Wilmeth Sidat-Singh of the Orange and Sid TLuckman of Columbia, Lou Little's players haven't exhibited too much of that winning punch this season, and Syracuse, whose losses to weak teams have been as startling as wins over powerful elevens such as Cornell and Colgate, is one of the big uncertain- ties of the year. It would seem that ' the two teams are very evenly match- ed, with all sorts of action in view. . For the first time since 1908 Prince- ton and Army will get together again on the field of battle. The Cadets, playing their first game in Palmer stadium, ought to subdue the Tigers without much ado, Giving the New York City fans another gander at the cream of the South, Fordham plays host to South Carolina. on the heels of their game with the Tar Heels. The results of the game won't cut much ice one way or the other, but the contest itself will be interesting enough to draw one of the biggest crowds of the day. Resting up for Thanksgiving Day games, Cornell, Pennsylvania and Navy take a vacation this Saturday, but other good games in the East find Pittsburg and Penn State pitted against each other, Maryland and Gleorgeton and Lehigh and Lafayette. In The Middle West National interest will center in the Middle West on the game between Notre Dame and Northwestern, which bids fair to be one of the standout contests of the year. Notre Dame has the best record, of course, but North- western has turned in several very Other mid-western games: Ohio State-Michigan, Towa- Nebraska Chicago-Illinos, Iowa State and Oklahoma, Michigan State and Temple and Indiana and Purdue. On the Western coast two outstand- ing games bring together California arid Stanford and Oregon and Wash- ington, plenty of action is promised in ‘the South-West where Rice and Texas Christian tangle, Baylor meets South- ern Methodist, Southwestern plays Mississippi State and Arizona meets Marquette, South Georgia and Auburn, Duke and North Carolina State, Georgia Tech and Florida and Tulane and Se- wanee come together in the South. Thanksgiving Day Game Will Climax Local Grid Season Kingston Township scored a one- sided 20-6 win over Jenkins Town- ship last Saturday, and meets Factory- ville at home tomorrow (Saturday) afternoon. In the Jenkins game, Coach Walter Hicks’ charges played a spotty first half, marked by weak blocking, but pepped up in the latter stages of the contest and pulled up an impres- sive score, The opposition in this week-end’s game has gone through its season undefeated, but the Trucksville squad should be able to add another victory to a satisfactory string. / Lehman is idle this week, and it looks as if Coach Malcolm McCulloch will put a very convincing team on the field against K. T. H. S. Thanksgiving Day after two weeks of extensive prac- tice. After the first few games of the season, it was evident that the real fight for the Back Mountain Football Conference Championship would be be- tween Lehman and Kingston Towne ship, for Dallas Township, in spite of the weight and experience of its play- ers, showed a lack of spirit and punch from the very first and its discourag- ‘ing record could not be compared with that of the other two teams. Lehman and K, T. H, S., however, have progressed through the fall on fairly even terms, Lehman’s record is marred by only one defeat, but Kings- ton Township, which has fallen on two occasions, has played more games with better teams. The fact that both teams defeated Dallas by nearly identical scores makes their records even more closely akin. The players from Trucksville may rule slight favorites in the Thanks- giving Day game, for Coach Walter Hicks has the bigger squad of the two and three of his best players, ineligi- ble the early part of the season, have; been declared eligible for play in the Turkey; Day classic. From this corner, however, it looks like anybody's game and anybody’s ti- tle. Both elevens are light, fast and equally courageous in play. Lehman seems to have a slight edge as far as defense work and blocking goes. but K.T.H.S. has a somewhat heavier team and all and all a. more smoothly working combination of backs and ends, Eastern Star To Have Annual Dinner-Dance Dallas Chapter, Order of Eastern Star, will hold its annual dinner dance on December 9 at Irem Country Club.
