'Shavertown Residents File Petition
Asking Court To Form A New Borough
Petition Comes As Result of Bitter
Feelings Over School Affairs In
Kingston Township
Residents of Kingston township liv-
ing in Shavertown have filed a peti-
tion with Luzerne county court for
the formation of a, borough to be
known as Shavertown borough. Peti-
tions were filed this week by Atty.
D. O. Coughlin, solicitor for the peti-
tioners. Notice was served upon other
residents of Kingston township,
through advertising notices in Wilkes-
Barre papers, that a majority of the
freeholders living in the village of
Shavertown have signed the petition.
The desire on the part of Shaver.
town residents to have a borough, is
an outgrowth of the recent contention
over school matters in Kingston town-
ship.
Residents of the Shavertown section
were indensed because a representa-
tiv from their community was not el-
ected to the school board at the gen-
eral election and also because an in-
junction was served restraining the
school board from purchasing the
Shaver plot in Shavertown for the
erection of a new high school build-
ing.
Community meetings have been held,
feelings have been tense friend-

[ fore the severe snow storm of Mon-
day and Tuesday the ice has not yet
reached a suitable thickness for eat
ting.
In an effort to. increase the thick-
ness of the ice, holes have been cut
through the surface of the ice at var-
jous distances to allow the water to
overflow and. mix with the Snow on
top. ‘It is’ believed that with contin-
ued cold weather and the surface
snow and water freezing that a suf-
ficient thickness will be attained to
warrent cutting and storage.
