The People's Alliances, In convention at Hazleton yesterday, adopted the re port of the conference committee which was appointed to devise a method to bring about a settlement of the coal strike and adopt plans to prevent a repetition of such industrial conflicts. The executive committee consisted of one representative from each local branch. J. J. McMenamin served on the committee for Freoland. This committee, among other things, advisod that the governor bo asked to call a special session of the state leg islature to enact legislation recommend ed by the convention; that present legis lation be revisod so that the state may have more power over foreign corpora tions doing business within its borders; that a law be passed making it illegal for an person under 21 years of age to be employed more than eight hours a day; tho enforcement of Sections 10 and 17 of Article 10 of the state constitu tion, which provide for the revocation of the charters of corporations which abuse the privileges granted therein. The conference comiuittee will call upon Governor Stone and request that he call a special session of tho legis lature as soon as possible. There were present seventy-five dele gates from alliances In twenty-one towns In the coal regions. Organiza tion was effected by the election of the following officers: President, D. J. McCarthy, Hazleton; vice presidents, John H. Bernard, Mc- Adoo; Hugh Malloy, Freeland; J. W. Gerhart, Ashland; M. C. Watson, Shen andoah, and T. F. Hart, Wilkesbarro; secretaries, E. J. Mctilnnls, Girardville, and C. F. Stranghn, Shenandoah; treas urer, Johu Smith, Mahanoy City. Senator Quay and Senator Piatt held a long conference in New York city last night. It was said that tbey decided to have tho Pennsylvania legislature con vene In extra session and begin war on the coal operators with a view to ending the strike. Both senators fear the strike will hurt their party in tho com ing campaign. School Board Meeting. Directors Brogan, Buckley, Fetter man, Isaac, Kline, McGeehan, Shel hamer and Timony were present at the Septomber meeting of tho borough chool board, which was held last even ing. Mr. Brogan was chosen chairman. Interest amounting to $75 on a 81,500 mortgago hold by Gabriel Miller on South Washington street property was ordered paid, and tho 83.000 insurance on Eckloy B. Coxe building was ordered renewed. A discussion on repairs to tho heating furnace In Daniel Coxe building resulted in the board vlowing tho apparatus as a committee of the whole and rocominend- Ing to the building committee that gal vanlzed-iron stacks be placed from the furnace to the chimney. The building committee was em powered to sell all scrap-iron, broken castings, etc., In the several buildings. The solicitor was orderod to release the bonds of ox-Treasurers Everitt and McCole. Treasurer Tlraony reportod a balance on August 31 of 82,258.23. The secretary was authorized to pro cure such coal as may bo required by tho schools before the October meeting of the board. Prohibition Addresses. Rev. Dr. Swallow, of Harrisburg, Pro hibition candidate for governor, and E. D. Nichols, of Wllkesbarre, spoke to an audience of 300 people at the Public park yesterday afternoon. Both gentle men delivered good addresses and their remarks were favorably commented up in. They are making a strong effort this year to poll a large vote for the state ticket of tho Prohibition party. Twenty-six strikers were convicted In Schuylkill court yesterday of rioting and were sentenced to pay the costs and give bail for their good behavior. All were taken to jail. Tho county com missioners will release thorn from the payment of the costs tomorrow and they will be allowed to go free. Hazleton club was invited to play a game hero next week, during tho K. of M. C. convention, but tho manager positively refuses to risk the reputation of his team by playing away from tho protection of the "hoodlums" who con gregate at Hazie park. Official calls have been issued for tho Democratic county and legislative con ventions. Tho former will bo held at Wllkesbarre on September 10 and the latter at Hazleton on the 15th. Both primaries will be held on the 13th. Tho explosion of a kerosene lamp In the shoe-repairing shop of Henry Mower caused some excitement on South Centre street Wednesday evening. Tho fire which followed was extinguish ed boforo any damage was done. Tho Republicans of the town and county will vote tomorrow for those whom they wish to stand as candidates on the congressional and county tickets next fall.
