BIG CAVE-IN THIS MORNING Lehigh Valley Tracks Go Down at Highland. All Railroad Communication Suspended Between Free land and Wilkesbarre. Large Area Affected. At an early hour this morning a largo cave-in occurred in No. 1 colliery, High land, and the consequent disturbing of the surface caused suspension of traffic on the Lehigh Valley Railroad between Freoland and Wilkesbarre. No trains were run today over the affected part of the road until 11.51 a. in., when the north-bound possenger train passed safely over the cave-in. The workings of No. 1 Highland col liery undermine the railroad tracks for a considerable distance between Free land and Highland. At the point where the cave-in occurred this morning, near the stripping at the intersection of the Highland and Sandy Run turnpikes, tho danger has been known to exist for some time and a watchman has been stationed at the spot. The cave-in covers an area of several acres. The ground under tho railroad tracks settled about Ave feet, and at some points the rails wore somewhat twisted by the drop. Early this morning the railroad com pany set a large force of men at work repairing tho breaks and raising the tracks, and at 11.45 o'clock the damage done had been overcome sufficiently to permit tho train duo at 11.51 to pass safely over the ground. Tho northbound train leaving horo at 7.34 a. in. was taken off at Freoland, and the ono due here from the upper end at 9.30 o'clock was run from White Haven via l'enn Haven. The cave-in occurred at an hour when the road is not being used, otherwise a serious accident might bavo happened. Will Not Change Name. Over four hours wore taken up at yes terday's session of the Irish Catholic ilonevolont Union convention, at Ply mouth, in a debate as to the changing of the word Irish to international. It was a light between the delegatus rep resenting different sections of tho United States. The New England representa tives wort heartily in favor of this sub stitution of names, while the Philadel phia delegation were about evenly divid ed on the matter. The motion to sub stitute was defeated. The time for holding the convention was changed from annual to biennial. Tho secretary's salary was reduced from 3500 to S4OO and the per capita tax, re gardless of sex, was fixed at 10 cents. The Anthracite Market. Saward's Coal Trade Journal for this week has tho following: "With tho first of next month the last of the 10 cent monthly advances in the price of hard coal, as per tho plan laid down in March last, will have taken place. This will bring the prices up to the rate prevailing in the spring of the year, and the arrangement has proven a good one to the trade In its entirety. It is one of those old fashioned ideas which is well worthy of revival. "It is tho sheerest rubbish to talk of 'merciless coal barons' In connection with the arrangement which has pre vailed, and only those of little know ledge or of limited experience in the trade will do so, and give the press the very erroneous Ideas of this industry, which we find only too frequently. FREELAND, PA., FRIDAY, AUGUST 2-3, 1901. "Prices of hard coal are better this year than in many recent years. The individual operator poses In the papers and before his customers as an injured individual. They are getting a good thing out of the present hard coal trade conditions. The new contracts have been accepted, signed and delivered to the operators. Tho 65 per cent con tracts may be considered in full force, and all that remains to be completed is the settlement of the various amounts due on the adjustment of the new scale since last November. "The bluffs put up in recent years by those people proved successful, for the reason that trade was in such condition that concessions wore necessary. Rus inass is now on a solid foundatiou."
