Democrats Take Control of the Borough Board and Elect New Officers—Foster Men Rebuke Treachery. Freeland school board met Monday evening with Directors Kline, Trevas- Uis, Evorilt, McColo, Van Horn, Timony, Isaac and Krommes prosant. Tho fol lowing bills were ordered paid: Nation al Publishing Company, books, 87.40; J. H. Trovaskis, salary as secretary, $125; postage, etc., $4.31); C. (). Stroh, Esq., salary as solicitor, S4O; Electric Light Company, 87c; Co.xe Pros. & Co., coal, $30.50; Freeland Water Company, $12.88; Press, paper, 70c; Tribune, paper, $2; William Solt, labor, etc., $15.77: W. E. Martin, glass, $3.55; M. E. (Jrover, 40c; total, $227.00. Treasurer Van Horn reported a bal ance of $501.67. Supervising Principal Houck's report for the ninth month and a review of the term was presented. The enrollment for May was 783, an increase of 127 over the same month last year; for the year the enrollment was 1,008, an increase of 06. Tho report showed the followihg promotions: C to B Primary, 168; Bto A, 113; A to C Intermediate, 105; C to 11, 97; B to A, 55, A to B Grammar, 26; B to A, 16; A to High School, 14; First Year High School to Junior Year, 13; Junior to Senior Year, 10; total number of promotions, 617. The report also showed that the pres ent schools will be unable to accommo date the pupils noxt term, without al lowing for any increase, and that at least two more rooms must be provided for primary department pupils. The report was accepted and referred to the incoming board. • A vote of thanks was tendered to the retiring mombers, Messrs. Kline, Tre vaskis, Brown, Kromoies, Van Horn and Kveritt, after which the board approved its minutes and adjourned. The remaining directors, Messrs. Mc- Colo, Isaac and Timony, organized temporarily by olecting Director Isaac chairman and Director McColo secre tary. The election certificates of the new members were read and accepted and the following took their seats as direct ors: W. J. Brogan, Daniel S. Buckley, Dominic Kelly, W. I). Kline, Hugh McUeehan, William J. Purcoll, I). F. Shelhamer and Thomas A. Slattery. A permanent organization was elToct ed by electing Mr. Slattery president and Mr. Purcoll secretary. Mr. McColo was chosen treasurer and John J. Mc- Brearty, Esq., solicitor. There was no opposition to any of the above. The salaries of all the officers were placed the same as last year, viz.: Secretary, $125 per year; treasurer, 2 per cent on all moneys expended; solici tor, S4O per year: janitor, S3O per month during the school term. The treasurer's bond was placed at $20,000. The first Wednesday evening of each month was selectod as tho regular meet ing night. The manual governing the schools was re-adopted, after which the board ad journed until tills evening. The retired board consisted of eight, Republicans and two Democrats. The present board is composed of eight Democrats and four Republicans. FOSTER BOARD. The New Director# Given Two or the Olliee* by Their Colleague*. Messrs. Mcllugh, Keller, Doudt and Argust were present at the meeting of the Foster school board Monday even ing. In the absence of President Les ser, Mr. Mcllugh presided. A vote of thanks was tendered Messrs. Lesser and Argust, tho retiring directors. The board then adjourned sine die. A temporary organization was effect ed by the election of Director Doudt as chairman and Director Mcllugh secre tary. The certificates of Neil P. John son and John O'Nell were received and tho members seated. The following officers were unani mously chosen: President, Neil P. Johnson; secretary, Frank Mcllugh; treasurer, John O'Neil. President John son made a neat spoech and asked the aid and co-operation of his colleagues in keeping tho standard of tho schools and pupils at the present high mark and by onconmy and business methods trans act the duties entrusted to them: The first Sat urday of each month was fixed as the regular meeting. The bond of Treasurer O'Neil was fixed at $30,000. The board will moot .Juno 15. According to custom Mr. Zeistloft should have been chosen treasurer, but his treachery to the party last February brought upon him the condemnation of all Democrats and the board's action in turning him down is applauded by men of all parties who like to see ingratitude receive its just deserts. Married This Morning. John C. Boyle, proprietor of the St. Charles hotel, and Miss Bid McLaugh lin, of Adams street, were married this morning at St. Ann's church by Rev. F. Mack. The ceremony took place at 8 o'clock. J. F. Dwyor, of Wilkesbarre, was groomsman and Miss Sadie Slattery was bridesmaid. COUNCIL MEETING Monthly Session or the Borough Legis lators Held Monday Evening. The June meeting of tho borough council was hold Monday evening, with all members present except Messrs. P. G. Gallagher and Schnee. A request for an increase of 25 cents per day was received from tho employes of the street department. Street Commissioner Shov liti was fined one day's pay for neglect ing his work. A petition for an arc light at Birk beck and Walnut streets was read and referred to the light committee. The following nominations were an nounced by President Moerschbachcr and approved by council as members of the Board of Health: Dr. Portser, one year; John B. Hunlon, two years: John E. Mcllugh, three years; Jacob Stsonowskl, four years; Charles Dus heek, live rears. The solicitor was instructed to have tho bonds of the ex-treasurers released. The tax levy for the year was fixed as follows: Light and water, 8 mills; borough purposes, f mills; sinking fund, 5 mills. The finance committee was instructed to take action to compel the auditor ap pointed by court in the matter of the Houth Hebertou annexation to file his report. Representatives of the Carpenters' Union of Ha/.leton were in town yester day and submitted thoir scale to local contractors. They also will make an effort to organize the men here.
