Organized Labor in All Parts of the State Preparing to Send Men of Their Own Selection to Harrisburg. The movement begun by the miuer9 of the Fourth district to engage in poli tical manors at the next election for members of the legislature, which was first mentioned in Friday's Tribune, is rapidly spreading to all parts of the state, and instead of the miners alone, being engaged in looking after their In terests It is quite probable that organiz ed labor in general will enter the politi cal field and insist that men chosen from the ranks of workers shall be selected as legislative candidates by both parties. Outside the mining regions there are ssveral strongholds of laboring men, and, wherever the proper spirit of self interest dominates, the movemont to send workingmen to the next legislature has found & ready response. The proposition of the miners, and the causes which led up to It, at out lined on Friday in these columns, has been favorably commented upon by the press of the whole state. In the bitu minous region, especially, the miners are ready to throw their entire strength and influence with any plan which will secure miners hotter representatives at Harrisburg. The only dissent so far heard has come from tho professional politicians and ringsters. These men are 9hrowd enough to see that their days of alleged usefulness will come to an end as eoon as the movement assumes dolinite shape. One of the amusing consequences of the publication of tho miners' plans is the haste manifested by the present representatives in the legislature from tho coal fields to show their friendship for tho labor bills now before that body. For weeks these same men refused to even listen to the appeals of tho minors' committees to securo thorn needed legis lation; today they aro threatening the machine-bosses with dire vengeance if the miners' bills aro not passed. This death-bed repontence is not likely to fool tho miners. In addition to the candidacy of Coun cilman I'. (J. Gallagher for representa tive, who is an aspirant for the Demo cratic nomination, Hon. William R. Jeffrey, of Hazloton, has announced himself as an applicant for tho Republf | can nomination in this district. An nouncements of candidates in other dis tricts are expocted to be mado in the near future. A Field for Work. It is reported that % hrancfi of the Humane Association Is to bn established at Drlflon. If tho town is favored with good weather tomorrow, Memorial Day will bo befittlngly observed here. Guard Against Smallpox. There is a feeling in town that council should take prompt measures to estab lish the Hoard of Health on a firm foundation. The prevalence and steady spread of smallpox in the upper end of the county ought to be guarded against by the local officials, and with out an active Hoard of Health little or nothing can be done to prevent the in troduction of the disease into town. With the coming of warmor weather tho danger will be greater. No Deputies to Be Had Here. An effort was made in Froeland yes- ' torday by a Ilazleton man to induce i men here to go to Wilkesbarro to serve as deputies and guard the non-union • machinists who have taken strikers'! placos in the Lehigh Valley shops in that city.
