TONIGHT'S PLAY.
Mildred Holland and Her Company Have
Arrived in Town.
Mildred Holland and her company
arrived in town this morning aftor an
all-night ride from Cortland, N. Y.,
n-horo they played last evening.
Tonight they will present the noted
romantic drama, "The Power Behind
the Throne," for the first time before a
Freeland audience.
Wherever this company has appeared
they have left behind them satisfied
theatre-goers and a demand from the
opera house managers for dates next
soason. The drama it pronounced by
expert critics to be the best of its class
placed on the stage this soason. It will
be given in Freeland under a contract
which provides that the company shall
receive $450 for the performance, which
is the highest price ever guaranteed for
one performance in this county.
There are a number of desirable 9ats
on both the first and second floors that
can yet be obtained. The sale so far
has been encouraging to the manage
ment, but the house is not yet sold out,
notwithstanding the rumors circulated
to this effect.
Work on Mine Fire.
Tremendous efTorts are now being
made to extinguish the fire which lias
been burning for forty-two years in a
mine at Summit Hill. The mine is the
property of the Lehigh Coal and Navi
gation Company, aud caught firo on
February 9, 1859, in a gangway, after
an explosion of gas.
A darn has been built at Nesquehon
ing, and thero wet coal dirt and culm is
•cooped into pipes and flushed into the
workings where the fire rages at the
rate of thirty or forty tons a day. It
is expected that this will eventually
choke the fire.
Turned Up for His Share.
A sensational story eomes from New
Castle, l'a., concerning a young man
named Abner Davis, who is said to have
mysteriously disappeared from his home
in Nantleoke over fifteen years ago.
Despite diligent search and inquiry by
his father and relatives nothing was
hoard of him until last Saturday—long
after he was given up as dead. Mr.
Davis, Sr., died several years ago and
left a fortune of SIOO,OOO to bo divided

tors have already paid the money to the
other heirs.
Dr. "Dan 1 ' Evans, of New Castle, a
former resident of Nantlcoke, is one of
the executors, and ho was called upon
on Saturday by young Davis, who made
himself known and demanded the legacy
loft him by his father. Mr. Davis has
boon a "globe-trotter," but refuses, it is
said, to assign any reason for his sudden
disappearance and strange silence for
so many years.
Nine-Hour-Day Party.
At the Lyceum theatre, Scranton,
last night the affiliated unions of ma
chinists, blacksmiths, patternmakers
and machine shop laborers presented a
request for a nine-hour day in a unique
manner. They gave an entertainment
to which they specially invited the
superintendents and foremen of all the
shops in the city. There were ad
| dresses on the advisability of a nine
hour day, which they ask to go into
ofTect tomorrow, and there was a farce
enacted entirely by the members of the
union in which the wild-eyed labor agi
tator and the miilowner and superin
tendent who oppose every progressive
movement of labor were satirized. At
the conclusion of the farce the request
for a nine-hour day was formally pre
sented.
In the Hotel Business.
P. E. Gallagher and R. F. Hodges, of
Thurmond, W. Va., according to the
Thurmond Herald, last week purchased
tho Kinney cafe at Cliarloston. The
consideration was 810,000. The new
proprietors have named their hotel "The
Stag," and if any Freeland people hap
pen In the vicinity of Charletton they
can depend upon receiving a royal
welcome at "Tho Stag."
Mr. Gallaghor was a former resident
of this roglon and Is a brother to ex-
Burgess E. P. Gallagher. His friends
here will wish him unlimited success In
bis latest venture.
Will Send Body Home.
James Welch, of the Third ward, has
received notice from the war depart
ment, that the body of his son, Thomaa.
will be brought from the Philippines in
the near future and sent to Freeland.
The young man was a private In Com
pany 11, Nineteenth infantry, and died
from fever last December.
The bodies of all soldiers who died or
were killed in the Philippines will be
brought to tho United States, but those
not claimed by relatives will be buried
in tho government cometery at San
Francisco.

ROUND THE REGION.
A political sensation was caused at
Pottsvllle yesterday by the ousting from
their places in the county almhouse all
appointees who were installed on April 1
last to serve for one year. The changes
made involve the displacement of all
the appointees of John F. Horgan, a
Democratic member of the board, who is
alleged to have displeased his party
leaders by acting with Edward Kester,
the Republican member, when the posi
tions were filled a month ago. In the
shake-up, Mr. Kester took tho side of
Henry Becker, the other Democrat.
An attack on Sunday funerals was
made Sunday night by Rev. L. C. Mur
doch, of the Kingston M. E. church.
He said that Sunday funerals should bo
abolished because the church is en
titled to the pastor's service on Sunday.
They roquirc, he said, work on the part
of liverymen and others, and the fact
that a larger attendance can bo had on
the Sabbath Is no justification for It.
Mr. W. J. Baxter of North lironk, N.
C. says he suffered with piles for fifteen

Lieutenant William Glidden, of the
Salvation army, was arrested at Wilkes
barre, charged with failing to support
his wife and three children for a year.
He left them to join the army, he said,
and Mrs. Glidden thought lie meant the
regulars, and when he was promoted to
lieutenant after a month's service she
was proud. When he returned to
Wllkesbarro to lead a meeting she had
him arrested and iie was sent to jail.
Announcement was made yesterday
that the Dickson Manufacturing Com
pany'. works at Scranton and Wiikes
barre have gone into the big combine of
machinery manufacturing concerns.
The locomotive shops of tho company
known as the Cliff Works were not taken
into the combine.

employes of the Pottsvllle Union Trac
tion Company has been averted. The
officials haye agreed to treat with the
men, who ask for an Increase of wagos.
The silk mill strike In Pittston has
been settled and the striking girls will
go hack to work Monday next. They
have accepted an advance in wages
equal to that gained by the mill workers
of Scranton.
Announcement was made today by
Judge R. VV. Archbald, of tho new
Federal court, that all the present
Unit.d States commissioners within the
territory of the districts are to be re
appointed.

At a meeting held last night property
owners of Pittston decided to sue tho

Wlikesbarre Board of Trade decided
yesterday to take active stops toward
settling the strikes at the silk mills of
Bamford Brothers and Goldsmith A Hess.
Bamford Brothers are arranging to move
their mills back to Paterson. N. J.
Mrs. Richard D. Iliinsfcker, aged 27
years, the death of whose husband from
typhoid fever and hiccoughing occurred
a week ago at Allentown, died yesterday
from the same disease.

William Newltt, a convicted prisoner,
disappeared from the courtroom Monday

day be died. He was 55 years old.
Judge Halsey yesterday made an ex
ample of an alleged bicycle thief by
sentencing Martin Boloser to fifteen
months in the penitentiary.
Tho employes of Ashley knitting mills
went on strike yesterday and were
granted their demands.
The licensed liquor dealers of Shepp
ton have organized to protect themselves
against the Inroads made Into their
business by men who soil illegally.

who resided here until after tha trial of
the deputies for tha Latlimar massacre
in 1897, 011 vrhich he served as a juror,

Mr. Washburn is not the first man to
learn by experience that corporations
are ungrateful.
Local Union No. 1519, U. M. W., of
Drlfton, with hundreds of its friends,
filled Yannes' opera house last evening.
The occasiou was the first ball of the
organization and It was a success In
overy respect. The energetic committee
bad left nothing undone to add to the
pleasure of all who attended.
Henry Ray Cunnius, aged 6 years,
died yesterday at the home of his par
ents, Mr. aud Mrs. Charles Cunnius,
Upper Lehigh. The funeral will take
place tomorrow afternoon at 1.30 o'clock.
Interment at Freeland cemetery.
The United States Express Company
placed a new delivery wagon on the road
this morning. The vehicle Is a product
of the Halpin shops and presents a
handsome appearance.
Ground was broken this morning on
the south side of West Walnut street
for a residence, 20x42 feet, for Robert
A. Leutz.
Mr. and Mrs. J. B. Laubach are re
moving their household goods to Wilkes
barre today and hereafter will make the
county seat their residence.
While a hearing was In progress on
Monday evening in Squire Shovelin's
oflice, a fistic ancouter between the
attorneys engaged, D. J. McCarthy and
Abner Smith, was narrowly averted.
On and after July 1 it will not be
uecessary to place revenue stamps on
bank checks, drafts and orders for the
payment of money, certificates of de
posits, postoffice money orders, pro
missory notes, mortgages, leases, etc.

An Infant child of Mr. and Mrs.

attend tonight's play at the opera house
are Informed that Traction cars will
run until 12 o'clock and perhaps later.
An addition is being built to the resi
dence of Superintendent L. C. Smith, in
Drifton.
A largo voln of coal has been found
at J. S. Wentz & Co.'s Hazle Brook
colliery and the employes are assured
of work for several more years.
The exterior of George H. Hartraan's

Henry Hinkle leaves today for New
ark, N. J., to work at his trade as car
penter.

will be held ou Wednesday and Friday
evenings at St. Ann's church.
In court yesterday a rule was granted
to vacate Wyoming street In the Wood
side addition to Freeland borough.
