Mildred Holland and Her Company Have Arrived in Town. Mildred Holland and her company arrived in town this morning aftor an all-night ride from Cortland, N. Y., n-horo they played last evening. Tonight they will present the noted romantic drama, "The Power Behind the Throne," for the first time before a Freeland audience. Wherever this company has appeared they have left behind them satisfied theatre-goers and a demand from the opera house managers for dates next soason. The drama it pronounced by expert critics to be the best of its class placed on the stage this soason. It will be given in Freeland under a contract which provides that the company shall receive $450 for the performance, which is the highest price ever guaranteed for one performance in this county. There are a number of desirable 9ats on both the first and second floors that can yet be obtained. The sale so far has been encouraging to the manage ment, but the house is not yet sold out, notwithstanding the rumors circulated to this effect. Work on Mine Fire. Tremendous efTorts are now being made to extinguish the fire which lias been burning for forty-two years in a mine at Summit Hill. The mine is the property of the Lehigh Coal and Navi gation Company, aud caught firo on February 9, 1859, in a gangway, after an explosion of gas. A darn has been built at Nesquehon ing, and thero wet coal dirt and culm is •cooped into pipes and flushed into the workings where the fire rages at the rate of thirty or forty tons a day. It is expected that this will eventually choke the fire. Turned Up for His Share. Dr. "Dan 1 ' Evans, of New Castle, a former resident of Nantlcoke, is one of the executors, and ho was called upon on Saturday by young Davis, who made himself known and demanded the legacy loft him by his father. Mr. Davis has boon a "globe-trotter," but refuses, it is said, to assign any reason for his sudden disappearance and strange silence for so many years. Nine-Hour-Day Party. At the Lyceum theatre, Scranton, last night the affiliated unions of ma chinists, blacksmiths, patternmakers and machine shop laborers presented a request for a nine-hour day in a unique manner. They gave an entertainment to which they specially invited the superintendents and foremen of all the shops in the city. There were ad | dresses on the advisability of a nine hour day, which they ask to go into ofTect tomorrow, and there was a farce enacted entirely by the members of the union in which the wild-eyed labor agi tator and the miilowner and superin tendent who oppose every progressive movement of labor were satirized. At the conclusion of the farce the request for a nine-hour day was formally pre sented. In the Hotel Business. P. E. Gallagher and R. F. Hodges, of Thurmond, W. Va., according to the Thurmond Herald, last week purchased tho Kinney cafe at Cliarloston. The consideration was 810,000. The new proprietors have named their hotel "The Stag," and if any Freeland people hap pen In the vicinity of Charletton they can depend upon receiving a royal welcome at "Tho Stag." James Welch, of the Third ward, has received notice from the war depart ment, that the body of his son, Thomaa. will be brought from the Philippines in the near future and sent to Freeland. The young man was a private In Com pany 11, Nineteenth infantry, and died from fever last December. The bodies of all soldiers who died or were killed in the Philippines will be brought to tho United States, but those not claimed by relatives will be buried in tho government cometery at San Francisco. A political sensation was caused at Pottsvllle yesterday by the ousting from their places in the county almhouse all appointees who were installed on April 1 last to serve for one year. The changes made involve the displacement of all the appointees of John F. Horgan, a Democratic member of the board, who is alleged to have displeased his party leaders by acting with Edward Kester, the Republican member, when the posi tions were filled a month ago. In the shake-up, Mr. Kester took tho side of Henry Becker, the other Democrat. An attack on Sunday funerals was made Sunday night by Rev. L. C. Mur doch, of the Kingston M. E. church. He said that Sunday funerals should bo abolished because the church is en titled to the pastor's service on Sunday. They roquirc, he said, work on the part of liverymen and others, and the fact that a larger attendance can bo had on the Sabbath Is no justification for It. Mr. W. J. Baxter of North lironk, N. Lieutenant William Glidden, of the Salvation army, was arrested at Wilkes barre, charged with failing to support his wife and three children for a year. When he returned to Wllkesbarro to lead a meeting she had him arrested and iie was sent to jail.
