Wilkesbarre Had a Sensa tion Yesterday When the Body of Anthony Lind acher Was Found. Anthony Lind&cher, a well-known citizen of Wilkesbarre, was found dead in his kitchen yesterday afternoon, probably murdered. The discovery was made by Edward Kear, a neighbor of Lindacher. Mrs. Kear had not seen the old man about the house as usual dur ing the morning, and when her husband returned home she asked him to look Lindacher up. He looked through the back widow and saw the old man lying on the floor. Ho climed in and found Lindacher dead. In the bedroom a chair was overturned, but there were no other signs of vio lence. At the foot of the steps was a plain gold ring, which Lindacher always wore. He was lying with his face to the kitchen door and had been dead some time. Over the left eye there were two cuts. The skull was crushed, but there were no other marks upon him except a redness of tho knees, as if he had been dragged over the floor. What the object of tho murder, if murder it prove to bo, was is not appar ent, unless it was believed the old man had some money hidden away. His son and the neighbors say that he always carried a consieerablo sum of money with him. At the Opera House. "Side-Tracked" met with au audience here on Wednesday evening which in numbers was one of the largest of the season, and the house rang with ap plause and laughter at the situations which the tramp and heroine created. Lou J. Beauchamp, who has been se cured to deliver tho first of the Y. M. C. A. benefit lectures on tbe 28th inst., is an orator of national reputation. His topic will be "The Sunny Side of Life." Tho lecture of Edward H. Frye on "Across the Atlantic," was well received by a fair-sized audience last evening. The next entertainment of the M. & M. series will be given on February 22. Convicted of Rioting. After a trial lasting ten days, a ver dict was rendered at Pottsville yester day in the case of tho thirteen miners who were charged with rioting at Oneida during tho strike. All were convicted but one, George G. Afton. Stephen Gregeoski, George Tomshky, Michael Martin, Thomas Harcur, Mike Callahan, Jacob Reinmeyer, John Hof fer, Bertie Hoilla. Rebemeyer, Bertie Hoilla, John Urick and John Poiigan, guilty each of assault and battery. At a former trial Harcur was acquitted of the charge of shooting Ralph Mills. Argument for a new trial was lixod for the 26th Inst. Two Men Killed. A telegram was received last evening by Mrs. John Hrenuan, of South Wash ington streot, notifying her of the death of her stop-brother, John O'Don noll, aged 21 years, of Mahanoy City. He was the victim of a mine accident yesterday afternoon. A fall of coal caused a squeeze in tho North Skldmore slant nt Nort.li Mahanoy colliery, killing Peter En twistle and O'Donnell. Georgo Hagerty received a fracture of his right leg. The men were robbing pillars with Samuel and Herbert Noakcs and Wil liam O'Hrian when the accident oc curred. Entwlstle was caught under the first fail and O'Donnell was running a'ong tho gangway for help when it closed in on him. Noakes and O'Brien had a run for thoir lives, and escaped miraculously. Will Be Appointed. The application of S. Depierro for an appointment to a clerkship by the legis lature has, through the efforts of Repre sentative Haworth, been favorably con sidered by the ruling powers at tho state capital, and it is given out from a relia ble quarter that ho has been selected for tho position of transcribing clerk 1u tho house of representatives. Mr. DePierro is well fitted for the position and tho selection pleases his large number of friends. Tho official list of appointments will not be an nounced until next week. Dwellings Are Scarce. Dwelling houses in town are at a premium, and upwards of fifty could be rented In a week if the houses could be had. There are many married men working here who cannot bring their families to town on account of tho lack of empty dwellings. There Is a rich field for the invest ment of capital in the erection of good houses In Freeland, and If tho town Is ever to Increase Its population buildings must be provided to accommodate those who want to live hole. South Ward Divided. In court on Wednesday the division of tho South ward into two wards was con firmed absolutely and a decree author ing the same was issued. Tho ward boundaries are tho same as those of the former voting districts. Tho territory east of Centre street and south of Main street will hereafter be known as the Fifth and west of Centro and south of Main street will be known as tho Sixth ward. Death of a Child. Sophia, a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Philip Young, died at tho family regl dence on the Hill last evening. The child was aged 5 months and 27 days. Tho funeral will take place on Sunday afternoon at 2 p. in. Services will be conducted at the house and tho remains will be taken via trolley to Joanesvllle, where the Interment will bo made. Fifth Ward Ticket. The Democratic delegates of the Fifth ward met last evening and nominated tho following ticket: School director—Thomas A. Slattery. Assessor—John Brennan. Judge of election—Daniel A. Furey. Inspector of election—Condy Mc- Laughlin. Injuries Proved Fatal. Paul Simons, of Sandy Run, who fell on the Ico early last week and fractured a leg, died yesterday in the Miners' hospital. The deceased was a promi nent man In Slavonian circles. The funeral will take placo on Sunday. In terment at St. Ann's cemetery. Injured at Highland Phoonix Ferio, a Lithuanian, was hurt this morning by a fall of coal in No. 2 mine, Highland. He sustained a com pound fracture of the left leg below tho knee. The Injured man was taken to the Miners' hospital. ROUND THE REGION Tamaqua police arrested Harry Diet rich. a Reading Railway brakeman, on the charge of the wholesale stealing of brass from the company. Dietrich ad mitted that lie had been stealing brass from the company eleven months, dur ing which time lie had taken G,OBI pounds. Receipts wero shown for $507.87, which he had received for the stolen goods. While Undertaker Lucas was prepar ing the body of George Strabo, who was ki led in tho mines at Mahanoy City, for burial, ho felt a large lump inside the dead man's working shirt, and was amazed to find it a roll of bills, amount ing to $730. Tho money will be sent to tho man's wife and children in Austria. Robert Taylor, the Mahanoy City druggist who Is charged with the at tempted poisoning of his wife, formerly Mrs. Mary Meyers, of that town, is on trial at Pottsville. On tho charge of murdering Elsie Meyers, his fourteen year-old stepdaughter, by giving her poison, he will be tried later. John J. Munro is in the county jail, a hopeless prisoner, sentenced to pay his wife $22.50 a month and not having a cent In the world. He has been there 9ix months. He says he expects to stay In jail all his life. Munro is an old man, who married a young wife, and he left her. Lackawanna grand jury has made presentments against six magistrates who, it is alleged, have been unlawfully drawing money from the county treas ury by manufacturing cases and multi plying cases. Mrs. Patrick Gallagher, the mother of John Curran, of Drifton, died yesterday at the homo of her son-in-law, John Martin, in Hazleton. She was aged 08 years and for over half a century had resided in lower Luzerne. The funeral will take place tomorrow morning. Nathan Beltz, of Birkbeck street, has been granted a pension of $0 a month from July 2, 1895, to March 2, 18D8, and from March 2, 1898, to date, $8 a month. His arrearage money amounts to $438.53. Tho Republicans of the First ward will hold their nominating caucus to morrow evening. The mine workers at Upper Lehigh, Sandy Run and llazle Brook will receive their earnings for December tomorrow. The district convention of the Wyoming valley United Mine Workers, In session at Edwardsvllle this week, urged its executive committee to secure legislation giving the check weighman, who Is appointed by tbo men, the same power as tho one employed by the com pany, providing that the quantity of coal mined by each miner be computed by weight instead of by the car, and that coal inspectors be elected by the people, Instead of by the stato examin ing board. Hereafter every union man in that region will possess a card, which, when he wants a position at another mine, he must present, to show that he is a union man. Unless he has such a card he cannot get employment. A motion was carried that all mem bers of the union will wear none but union made shoes.
