John Browning wont back to Colorado an Saturday a disappointed man. ile came East to recover treasure, only to learn that it had been found years ago. Browning was a nephew of Frank Ham ilton, who died in Colorado about a mouth ago. On his death bed Hamilton confided to his nephew the secret place of treasure consisting of jewelry to the value of 82,000, SI,OOO in money and five barrels of whiskey all hidden In a mine at Pittston. Hamilton gave his nephew a tracing of the slope and the chamber in which the treasure was placed after It had been stolen from merchants in Pittston. Browning reached Pittston last week. He made a diligent search of the mine, but could find no trace of the money or other valuables. On Friday he found out for the first time that the treasure had been recovered. A man named Owen, under oath, said he had helped to spend the money, amounting to several hundred dollars. Years ago he worked in No. 6 mine at Pittston. One day his laborer while re moving a pile of rubbish struck his pick against a wooden box, which, on •pening, he found to contain a lot of money In gold and silvor. The secrot of tho find was guarded so well that only tho men in the next cham ber were Informed. The next night they made an excuse of working over time and continued the search among the rubbish. The whiskey and jewelry were uncovered. The treasure was gotten to the surface and in time the whiskey and jewelry was sold or used up in some W *J- A Keen Disappointment. Contrary to eipectatlona, tha Upper Lehigh Coal Company did not pay Its employes on Saturday. It was the only coal corporation or firm In tha Lehigh region which withheld from its workers their November earnings, and the action was openly denounced by the men In severe terms through the mines and on the atreeta. The Upper Lehigh men ex pected to receive at least aa fair treat ment as those employed In neighboring mines, and their disappointment In being compelled to postpone their Christ inas shopping anothar week, or buy their holiday goods in the Upper Lehigh company store, was as hard a blow as has been given them In a num ber of years. What reason the company had in not paying as soon as those firms which have larger and more complicated pay rolls Is not known. It Is certain, how ever, that the action of the officials In depriving the workers of their earnings at this season of the year Is not calcu lated to bring about the good feeling which should exist between employer and employe. A SCIENTIFIC VIEW OF THE ALLEGED CRUELTY OF THE SPORT. The Creotarci Are Most Happy When They Are Hooked—They Have Little Capnelty For Suffering and Even Little Pleaeore In Eating. A little boy was fishing for the first time. With the customary luck of a beginner he had bass and perch galore to answer the Invitation of hia bait Presently the Impulses of the hu mane side of his nature made a little hesitating protest against the more savage Instincts of the sportsmanlike side. The wriggling of the fish when he canght them troubled him, and he sought to apologize to. his conscience for the suffering he was apparently In flicting. He said, "I think the rensou they Jump so Is that they are so glad to get out of that wet wnter." Curiously enough. If we may accept the testimony of the scientists, the lit tle boy was quite right. A ilsh Is never so happy as when he Is drawn out of tho water. The air Is to him quite all that laughing gas Is to a human being. It gives him a hundred times more oxygen per second than his gills ever got for him from the lnlialntlon of wa ter. It makes him delightfully drunk en. It cxhilarntes him. It fills him with a completeness of physical Joy— tho only Joy he Is capable of feeling— wholly unknown to him In his native element. He dies presently. It Is true, but he dies In an ecstasy of enjoyment Instead of dying In Ills appointed fash lon by suffocation In the maw of some bigger fish. In n footnote to the thirteenth ennto of "Don Juan" Byron denounces Izaak Walton as a "sentimental savnge" and characterizes fishing as "the cruelest, the coldest of pretended sports." Thnt only Bhows how little Byron knew about the matter. Ills sports Involved the sacrifice of women rather than worms. It Is time to set this mntter of fish ing upon Its moral legs, as It were, an end to bo accomplished merely by tell ing the truth about It A fish Is the very lowest form of the vertebrates. It Is Incapable of any Joy except that of getting hooked and thus drnwn out of the water to which Its nature con demns It and for a time breathing the air that Intoxicates It in delightfully deadly fashion. It has not even the In stinct of sexuni association except In the case of a few rare species. It knows nothing of compnnlonshlp, for the scientists tell us thnt even when fish swim In "schools" It Is only be cause they are engaged In a common predatory pursuit of prey, each endeav oring to snatch from the others the morsels they seek to swallow. So low In the scale Is the fish that even In eating he has no pleasure ex cept that of distending bis stomach. For the scientists find no "taste gob lets" nt the bnse of his tongue, and ev ery fisherman knows that the fish swallows his prey whole, with no pos sibility of detecting Its flavor. And further, every fisherman who has troll ed knows that the fish Is so far an In discriminate gorniand In his search for food that he will swallow a coffee spoon wltli a bur attnebed as readily as the daintiest bait morsel that could be displayed In front of his greedy eyes and his rapacious mouth. Still, again, every fish that Is caught upon a book gets only what he de serves. He Is enught every time In an attempt to swallow some other crea ture whole and digest It In slow tor ture. Indeed the entire life of every fish Is passed In n ceaseless endeavor to eatch and swallow other fish. So far ns science can discover, fish of most species make no distinction even In fa vor of their own young, their only ground of selection being a considera tion for their Individual throats In the act of swallowing. On thnt account alone the severely splned sunflsb es capes the predatory perch, and the bullhead the moment Ids "horns" are hard censes to be In danger even from the most voracious of pickerel. The fisherman Is not a monster of wanton cruelty. lie Is merely a de scendant of Adam exercising thnt "do minion" over Inferior creatures which God authorized him to exercise.— George Gary Eggleston In New York World.
