F REEL AND TRIBUNE. VOL. XIII. NO. 35. s. tin i is Corner Centre and Luzerne Streets. To k Pol! This is the time of the year when the average family is compelled to expend more money than at any other sea son. To prepare for winter means the purchasing of numerous necessary articles. Are you aware that an inspec tion of our stock will let you know that we can Save You Money? It's "volume" we're looking for these days, and not our usual percentage of profit. The lower we make the price the quicker you will buy our goods, and we're figuring on putting out hereafter twice the quantity monthly, at half the usual profits. It will pay us, and it will pay you, to take advantage of this proposition. Quantify and Quality. Wo carry as large a stock as any other general store in the region and the people tell us that the quality of most articles we sell are somewhat better, and very often somewhat cheaper, than you receive over the average counter. Our butter, eggs and groceries are always fresh, and all our goods are reliable. Corner Centre and Luzerne Streets. A Few Facts Worth Considering The necessity of having styl ish, distinctive footwear is be coming more apparent every day. We sell the kind that is different from the common place and ordinary. Come and see our Medium Weight Shoes Before you buy your fall goods. Call on us and examine the fine lines we carry. Prices right. For Fall Wear Wo are now closing out some elegant shoes at cut prices. Wouldn't it he a good idea to come and see them and talk it over? We have the stock and will let it go right. STAR SIECOJEJ STOHE. Hugh Malioy, Prop. C " r " c \^ Wonder If He Saw This? Ho was immured in the darkest dungeon beneath the custle moat "If I had a saw, a tile, anything—" he moaned, as he looked at the solid bars across the solitary wi -tdow. Then a thought struck him. Ills face brightened, like a Cripple Creek coniiagrution. Rapidly running over his supply of collars, which had just ui.ino from the laundry, he selected one lifted to his purpose. Five minutes later the great middle bar of the window, dexterously severed by the saw like edge of the laundered collar, fell apart. He Y/as Free. If ho had had his collars laundered at tho Freeland Steam Laundry he would he in jail yet. We have a device for ironing the top edge ol collars and cuffs and return them to you with a perfectly smooth edge. Try us. Freeland Steam Laundry. Clifford 11. lleller, i\lgr. 135 South Centre Street. FREELAND, PA., WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 19, 1900. STRIKE iS INCREASING Third Day Finds Many More Workers Idle. Appeals to Men Who Did Not Quit on Monday Are Having an Effect—Miners Are Gaining Ground. The situation in the coal fields today, so far as can bo learned from unbiased sources, favors the strikers. Heavy gains wore made yesterday and this morning throughout the Lehigh and Schuylkill regions by the pickets sta tioned on the roads leading to the mines, and hundreds of workers who were un decided as to what they should do have been persuaded to join the ranks of the strikers. In tho Wyoming and Lackawanna regions the situation remains unchang ed, all employes in these districts hav ing abandoned their positions, with the exception of those employed at the isolated mine at Mocanauqna, where operations are continued with a reduced forco. In tho Lehigh region tho claim of certain operators that they are working their mines full-handed is not borne out when investigated. Employes of col lieries where it is said tho strike has not afTocted operations are to bo seen by the dozens on the streets of Freeland and neighboring towns. Among the idle today are many men who worked on Monday and several who worked Monday and Tuesday. President Mitchell, on behalf of tho strikers, asserts that 122,000 men are idle this morning, and it is significant that no employer can be found who will deny this claim. Representatives of tho operators who havo been asked for a statement on this feature of the trouble refuso to give any figures, eon tenting themselves with the remark that they have more men at work than the union men will admit. The first advance in the price of coal as a result of the strike was made by the Philadelphia and Reading Company yesterday, 25 cents a ton being added. This advance was promptly met. by the dealers in the large cities, who increased the price to consumers 50 cents a ton. Father Phillips made a statement to the public last night presenting an argu ment in behalf of arbitration and urg ing both sides to got together. Local Situation. Half a dozen strangors, presumed to bo Pinkerton men, assisted by bosses and office clerks from Drlfton, lined the roads leading from town to Drifton col lieries this morning. Their object seemed to bo to try to learn who are serving as miners' pickets. All of Markle Co.'s collieries shut down at noon today to give those who are working an opportunity to attend the general mooting at 4 o'clock. No effort has been made by the Upper Lehigh Company to resume work. Drifton No. 2 Is working at a dis advantage and No. 1 is shut down com pletely. Sandy ltun and Eckloy aro without change. At No. 5 breaker, Jeddo, only 170 cars were hoisted yesterday. To do this It was necessary to empty every car in the mine. The average day's hoisting is over 000 cars. President Mitchell and others will ad dress a mass meeting at Jeddo after the employes' meeting this afternoon. Coal and iron policemen escorted home the breaker boys and outside hands from No. 5, Jeddo, last evening. Oakdale mines are running with 60 per cent of the men at work. Ebervale is shut down. There was a fierce scrimmage late last night at Coleraino between strikers and men who refuse to cease work. It was currently reported on the streets last evening that Superintendent Dunkerly killed a mule yesterday at the bottom of an inside plane at No. 5, Jeddo, where ho was hoisting coal. JEDDO MEN TO MEET. A meeting of all employes of G. B. Marklo & Co. has been called for 4 o'clock this afternoon at Japan school house by the committee appointed on Friday evening to present the griev ances of the employes to the company. The committee consists of Ilenry Shov lin, Thomas Elliott, George Sweet, Thomas J. Boyle, James Bottoms, David Renshaw, Theobald Wackloy, John Brannigan and Frank Ray. It is understood that the committee will present the company's answers to the demands at this moeeting, and considerable interest is takon In the matter. Upon the company's reply will depend the future action of several men who have not yet ceased work. ADDITIONAL NEWS. Additional strike news will be found on the fourth page. Lutz Case Continued. The first case down for trial on Mon day in criminal court was that of John Lutz, of West IMttston, for the murder of liis wife. Lutz, it will be remember ed, was tried last spring and after a struggle lasting nearly throe weeks the jury returned a verdict of guilty of murder in the first degree. Two of the jurors, howevor, alleged that they wore coerced into the verdict by their as sociates and a new trial was granted by Judge Ilalsey. Monday morning the prisoner's at torneys asked for a continuance until November on the ground that a material witness, a physician, could not be pres ent. The physician had caused Lutz's father to be sent to the asylum on account of insanity, and had also ex amined Lutz as to his sanity. The con tinuance was granted. The dofendant while in court sat in his usual position, resting his head on his hands. His head and moustache aro shaven and ho looks much bettor than when tried beforo.
