The TRIBUNE hasjjhoon delayed consid erably longer than it expected in pro curing the style of type used in our reading columns today. This style, we have learned, is the most popular with those who read the TRIBUNE, and our stock is now so complete that hence forth we can make the paper look like itself again, as we promised to do in the issue after the lire in this office. We were, laboring under many disadvan tages for a month past, but with the kind assistance of fellow-publishers the TRIBUNE managed to keep pretty near its old-time place in the profession. However, we are now prepared to de pend entireh upon our own establish ment. having refitted the newspaper and job departments in a manner that allows us to execute any class of work in the line of printing. Senator Vaughn, of Lackawanna county, lias introduced a bill in the sen ate to abolish the death penalty in this state. This might be all very well for his section, but what lower Luzerne needs is some means by which the pen alty can be put into operation more fre quently, at least once for every dozen murders that occur on the South Side. A state committee with power to probe into Philadelphia's corrupt municipal government is not improbable, as a re sult of the quarrel between Quay and .Martin. The former, if lie wishes to avenge himself, can order his legislature to create such a committee, but it is not likely Quay's vengeance will go so far as that. Some of the senator's lieutenants would appear in anything but an envi able light after an honest investigation, and Quay is not the man to sacrifice his friends in order to show how rotten Philadelphia's government lias become under the Martin-Porter regime. Senator Quay's speech in the United States senate last week, asking that the income tax law lie amended so as to compel corporations to give to the pub lic the names and salaries of all persons employed by them, brings before the people a que*tion of much importance. As tin- senator stated, it. would take oil the disguise of many men. who, while I hoy hold high positions of trust and pretend to be friends of the public, are in reality the tools of some corporation. Ky making known the fact that those men are employed by corporations, tin* people at large would know iiow to treat their views and trace them to i heir proper sources. There are too many men now. in municipal, state and national life, who are the disguised em ployes of trusts and kindred associa lions. Remove their masks, and let all know the price paid for such servitude. "Judge Darte. the Republican or phans' court jti'lgp* lias given the two Democratic common pleas judges a pointer. lie hail hardly been installed HI his office until he ousted all the Demo crat ic attaches of his court. When tin common pleas court became Democratic an attempt was made to displace some of the Republican 'hangers on," but it was not successful. Some of these 'hangers on' have been occupying office for a generation or more, M says the NCWH dealer. "They are not only Republicans in name, but bitter partisans as well, it seems to us that what is sauce for the goose ought to be sauce for the gander, too. What do our Democratic judges say?" Judge Darte's action in sweeping out the attaches is causing a great deal of unfavorable criticism, not so much on account of the act itself, but the unne cessary haste with which it was per formed. His elevation to the bench did not change him from a scheming politi cian, or cause him to learn the common rules of courtesy. Rills have been introduced in the leg islature by Senator Kline and Represen tative Jeffrey which, if successful, will bring about the new county. During the two years which have elapsed since the last battle was fought upon this issue at iiarrisburg. the TRIBUNE has carefully watched the tide of public opinion on the North Side, aud from time to time lias noted the same. From a determined and almost unanimous op position. the feeling gradually changed to one of indifference, then later to a mild support of the new county. Among t hose who have little or no business of a legal nature at Wilkes-Rarre there is not much concern whether the measure succeeds or fails, but the people who do have occasion to attend court affairs are becoming more and more convinced that the business of the county is too j large to bo handled with the speed it | requires. The promoters of the new 1 ' county have many things in their favor ■ now. and the success of the plan is con fidently predicted by its advocates. I PICKED UP BY THE WAY. THINGS SEEN AND HEARD IN THE TOWN AND VICINITY. Tli© Collapse of u Mainraotli~t£winrillng Scheme, Which Ensnared HundredH of I'eople Hereabouts, Commented Upon ly the Snunterer. It L strange tin* delight some people take in wandering away from the path of legitimate enterprise to get rich. The desire to keep up with the flights of fancy and fabulous wealth seems to be the uppermost thought in the mind of almost every person, and they don't care one jot how or where it comes from so long as it conies into their possession to remain. To get rich quick is the demand of the age. but as there are no definite rules to accomplish this inclination with a certainty the attempt only too often ends in disaster. This was the case of the many concerns that smashed and engulfed a number of peo ple in . Drifton and Freeland recently, legitimate business methods to invest their money were too slow for their am bition and they had been indulging in a get-rieh-qniek scheme. Now that every thing is lost they are begining to realize that they were playing with something like a buzz-saw. Those mutual stock gambling concerns had branch offices throughout the coun try and main offices in New York. Pitts burg and Chicago, but at present there is not an office to be found any where nor the investors' money either. It was one of those pet schemes where the more money is paid in the larger the profits become. Each of the mem bers strived to add all they could to their investments, and for the first half of last year the monthly and semi monthly dividends were gratifying. This continued and the investments grew larger, but the people who had been dreaming of riches and unlimited wealth from their get-rich-qulck hobby are. just beginning to recover their speech again after the severe shock they sustained by the utter collapse of the concerns. The sweep was complete and the lesson taught should remain indeli ble on the minds of these people for a lifetime. As is usual in transactions of this nature, where the innocent are to be ] duped, the manipulators of the gambling concerns waited until they had the net j full and then hauled it. The catch was large, and if the intention was to let none escape, they knew their business 1 perfectly, for the haul contained innum- | erable victims, each of whom had in- j vested sums varying from $lO to S4OO. 'I he loss s have been keenly felt by many of the investors and a bitter feeling now exists against those who were in any I way prominently identified in chanting I the praises of Wall street, although some j of the members assert that the consc- I < pienees have not been overlooked, and j one is as much to blame, as another. ! An opportutinity was presented to grati fy the mania of getting rich quick, and ' to get the wealth from any source, legiti mate or otherwise, was the redeeming feature of the enterprise. Like all get-rich-(piick schemes of this sort the dividends were unusually j large at lirst and were paid promptly, j Even person who was interested in it, j with the exception of a few who had dropped out when the dividends equall •*d their investments, congratulated j themselves and told their friends confi dentially how they had struck the trail upon which .las Gould had found his! way to fame and fortune. Thus it kept I spreading quietly—for it was too good a j thing to give the public—and as the workings of the concerns were explain- ! ••d and the dividends continued to flow in at regular intervals the wise and the unwise, both alike, believed it to be the ! best thing that ever came to this locality and backed their opinions to the extent of their pocket book, while new names were added to the roll every month. No distinction was made in regard to membership. Any person, male or fe male. with money and a good flexible imagination, was all that was nosessary. Thus it came about that even widow women, who had saved a few dollars for a rainy day, plunged into It. and invest ed sums varying from SSO to S3OO. In all. during the latter part of J894, tin* combined business transactions were conducted on a basis of about $3.000 a month. When the collapse came con sternation reigned supreme. The male portion of the investors wore struck dumb, but I am told the women man aged to retained their powers of speech, which found its way to Drifton. Here i be prominent members were employed and a rigid examination was instituted immediately. Some have lost both their money and their situations as the result, while the loss of their money and a I severe reprimand was considered sufli- I dent for the others. SAUNTEHEK.
