Se sion Wi = Fr m— By John R. Torguato, State Secretary of Labor & Industry _ Harrisburg There seem to be a good many misconceptions about the new Pennsylvania Unemploy- ment Com tion law. When ever something as important to the working population as unem- | ployment compensation undergoes the drastic changes it has under our administration, it takes a are fully understood. As you know, we raised maxi. mugn weekly benefits from $30 to wealtly. The $35 figure is the MAXIMUM only. Not ever: claimmnt will receive $5 It's computed this way: The Bureau of Employment Se. curity will take the quarter (3- © month period! of your base year during which you earned the most income. Let's say that your best quarter was April-June during which you earned $700 Your weekly benefit check will be one- twenty-fifth (4 per cent) of that figure, of $28 a week If you earned $500 during your best quarter, your weekly check will be $20. If you earned §1.000 dur- ing your highest quarter you will receive the £35 maximum Under the old act vour week- iy Benefit rate was computed on the basis of 1-25th of the earn- ings of the best guarter in your base vear Now, your benefit cheek will be computed either on that basis or on the basis of 50 percent of vour full-time weekly , whichever is greater oid law decided on a ben- fit riod for you determined by iength of time you were employed. It ran anywhere from 13 to 26 weeks Now, the benefit period is 3 weeks for everyone of- gible. AR extra month and a half of benefits are now available to wo- men unemploved because of preg- nancy. They are now eligible for benefits during the first seven and a hall months of pregnancy { Previously the period was six months. As before, she will tinue ineligible until a month ‘after confinement | Under the old law, persons lea iving work ‘because of martial filial and domestic cricumstances” fwere not entitled to benefits We! little time before these revisions have changed that to make eligi ble those who leave work fo reasons of a “necessmitous and compelling nature” “In other words Iaw now recognizes that there are cer tain family aad home relation ships and problems which may necessitate would be best to consult with the nearest bureau of Employment Security office in determine what ix considered ‘‘necessitous and compelling” Previously, workers unemployed the vacation ‘were usually to receive benefits enw been champed to read that claim ants who are unemployed that reason and who do not re ceive vacation pay directly or in directly may be entithvd to ben efits .
