SPORTS Patton Gymnasium Floor Is Refinished When the 1947-48 basketball season gets under way soon, the Patton High School Gym floor will be in grand condi- tion. A couple of men have been working steadily, sanding, var- nishing and refinishing the floor. Among other improvements and ones that have been long awaited and hoped for by the people of Patton are new bleachers. These new bleach- ers will have a seating capa- city of one-third more than the old omes and will therefore assure more people seats at the home baskeball games. Patton Halfback Wins Berth on All District Team Ralph Litzinger, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Litzinger of Patton, was elected by the coaches of this district on the Johnstown Democrat's All District Team. He was the only meiaber of the entire Cambria Co. League, both upper and lower sections, to make the team. Players were chosen for the district teams regardless of the sizes of school. Johnstown, Franklin and Conemaugh Twp. were other Cambria Co. represen- tatives. Ralph is the first player from Patton who has been thus recog- nized. He attended a dinner at the Fort Stanwix Hotel in Johnstown cn Monday, an affair sponsored by the Johnstown paper in honor of the coaches and all-star players of this district. ® Tyrone Wins 3rd Title by Defeating DuBois Hi Friday Tyrone High, with 18 consecu- tive wins over a Lwo-year period, closed its 1947 season last Friday evening by defeating DuBois High by a core of 19-7. This victory enabled the Tyrone eleven to cop its third title of the year—the Western Conference. They also hold the Central Co. Conference and Bald Eagle Con- ference titles. Tyrone has been undefeated since early in the 1946 season winning 11 games this year—10 of them being in the Western Con- ference. DuBois, which had an op- portunity to win the Western Conference this year by upset- ting Tyrone, scored its lone touch- down in the final period on a 93- yard drive. DuBois previous to the Tyrone game had a 6-1 Western Conference record. Tyrone took a lead in the first period on a 77-yard touchdown drive, and in the second period a pass was good for another goal. A 53-yard drive added the final six-pointer. \ Pittsburgh Pirates Buy 2 Dodger Infielders Two Dodger infielders, Stanley Rojak, 28, a shortstop, and Ed- ward Stevens, also 28, a first- baseman, have been purchased by the Pittsburgh Pirates in a deal consumated recently. HIGHLIGHTS Edited ”! LEO GRIMME St. Fronds College Trims Adelphi, 29-0, on Saturday St. Francis College's eleven handed Adelphi College a 29-0 trouncing Saturday afternoon in the Garden City Stadium, Long Island, N. Y., by scoring in every period but the third. The win was the 15th straight for the Red Flash and heaped another honor on St. Francis by making it one of only three col- leges in the state with unblemish- ed records. The others are Penn State and West Chester. Adelphi got off to a fast start, driving to the St. Francis 3 before the Red Flash held. Near the end of the first period, Adelphi got orf a bad kick, carrying only to the score. 30, from where Barnes, on a reserve, scored standing up. Mc- Henry made good the place kick. The Frankies scored again in the initial quarter on a 20 yard pass received by Durkin on the 20. Near the end of the half, Adel- phi was driven back for a safety. The third stanza was about a draw, although Chervenak made runs of 20 and 15 yards for the Red Flash. In the final period, Fagan intercepted a pass on his own 35 and raced for a touchdown with McHenry again making good a placement. Rice at TCU | §* at Duke |: UNION PRESS COURIER | Still Talk About | Gionfriddo’s Catch | Ever since Al Gionfriddo of Dy- | sart, Brooklyn Dodger outfielder, | won undying fame with the catch | he made of Joe DiMaggio in the | 6th game of the 1947 World's Series, fans have been. arguing whether or not he robbed the Yankee Clipper of a home run or merely an extra base hit of less damage. Everyone agrees that the catch saved the ball game, and that it was the greatest catch in World's Series play since Harry Hooper's in 1912, if not indeed the greatest in history. To settle the other argument, Bobby Bragan, the Dodger warm- catcher, seems the best witness. He was in the bullpen right back of Gionfriddo at the time. “It would have been a home run into the bullpen by a good two feet,” said Bragan. Billy Fox Takes LaMotta in 4th Billy Fox of Philadelphia, who is gunning for another chance at the light-heavyweight champion- ship, last Friday handed tough Jake LaMotta of the, Bronx the first knockout of his career in a fourth round win, after Referee Frank Fullam stopped what had become a slaughter. LaMotta, who never has been knocked down in the ring, never had a chance. Fox didn’t get La- motta down Friday either, but it goes on the books as a technical knockout—Billy’s 50th in his 51 professional bouts. Fox was KO'd once himself—by Gus Lesnevich, the light-heavyweight king.
