PAGE EIGHT TWO AUTO MISHAPS ATSPANGLER FRIDAY Two separate auto accidents in Spangler last Friday (the 13th, by the way) were responsible for the admittance and ‘tréatment of six persons at the Miners’ Hospital. All of those injured suffered from cuts of their heads and faces in the collisions. Robert Callahan of Pontiac, Mich., and a counsin, Robert Cal- lahan, Spangler, were passengers in a car driven by Tom Marshall, also of Spangler, which ran into the rear of a truck making a turn off a street in Spangler. The Callahans were able to leave the hospital after treatment, but Mr. Marshall was held for observation for a possible skull fracture. In the other accident, William Duriez, Barnesboro, was driver of an auto figuring in a collision with a car driven by John Reed, Spangler, on Route 219. William Keith, six-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Ed Keith, was a passenger in the Reed car. All were able to return home after treatment. CARROLLTOWN LEGION AUXILIARY HAS PARTY Members of the Legion Auxili- ary of Fox-Peale Post 506 ex- changed gifts at their annual Christmas Party last Tuesday. A card shower for veterans at the Aspinwall Hospital and a child welfare shower, consisting of cash donations, also took place. Mrs. M. J. Farabaugh, Miss Bernetta Farabaugh, Mrs. Harry Fees, Mrs. Frank Zadai and Mrs. Bede Bender were in charge of the lunch. Mrs. Ligouri Lacey, president, presided. AGREES TO DELAY IN COURT UMW RULING U. 8. Judge Alan T. Goldsbor- ough has approved an agreement between John L. Lewis’ attorneys and the government to delay until late next month further court ac- tion growing out of the recent soft coal strike. The agreement provides that any further litigation be deferred until 10 days after the Supreme Court hears arguments on the ap- peal of Lewis and the UMW from their contempt convicition. This appeal is due to be argued on Tuesday, Jan. 14. CPL. SAMUEL E, EVANS NOW WITH EATS HQS. Cpl. Samuel E. Evans, son of Mrs. Germain Farabaugh, Baker- ton, is currently assigned to the Headquarters of the European Air Transport Service as an Air Corps Supply Clerk, according to a letter received from Wiesbaden, Germany, by this newspaper. His organization, EATS, is the American flag carrier on the con- tinent and is responsible for link- ing the major cities and capitals of Europe in a closely knit net- work for the purpose of speeding the work of the Occupation. Cpl. Evans was a student at Carrolltown High School before entering the Army in June, 1945. He arrived in the European The- ater in April, 1946. Pleading guilty to a charge of larceny of an automobile, John Kuzmish of Spangler, was sen- tenced in court Monday to pay the costs and be on probation for | a period of 18 months. Kortz, assistant superintendent of the Miners’ Hos- pital, was elected president of the Nurses’ Alumni Assn. of the hos- pital at a regular meeting held in the Nurses’ Residence on Tuesday, Dec. 11. Other officers elected are Miss Martha Pollack, vice president, and Hazel Everetts, reelected as secretary-treasurer. LORETTO FOLKS TO GET BETTER PHONE SERVICE Residents of Loretto will bene- fit from a $10,900 installation of telephone equipment in a central exchange at Cresson now being undertaken by the Bell Telephone Co. It is expected to provide ser- vice for approximately 1,000 sub- scribers. The project will require months of work because of the necessity of installing new lines and trans- formers. The company also has plans for four other projects for building outside cables and lines to serve subscribers in outlying districts. Ex-Lt. Col. Named Head of Ebensburg Safety Council Jerome C. White of Ebensburg last Friday night was elected the president of Jos. A. Holmes Safe- ty Assn. Council. Mr. White héaded the mine saf- ety organization before enlisting in the service in World War II He is assistant vice president of J. H Weaver & Co. and served as a lieutenant colonel in the Eu- ropean theatre. He served in the Navy during World War I. MRS. SUSAN YCOBACK EXPIRES AT SPANGLER Mrs. Susan Ycoback, 71, of Spangler, died on Tuesday morn- ing at the Miners’ Hospital, where she was admitted on Monday. Her death was attributed to a heart attack. She was 65 years of age and was born in Czecho-Slovakia. Surviv- ing are six children—Peter, John- son City, N. Y.; Stephen, Barnes- boro; Joseph, Hazleton; Andrew, Barnesboro; George and Mary, both at home. There also are 14 grandchildren.
