In the first game of a May 5 double-header with the Dodgers, break up an attempted steal of second, threw the ball into center Cox nor Gustine covered the bag. Unable to determine who should have covered the bag, the official scorer gave the error to Salkeld. But three days later, when Gus- tine saw the official scorer, he told him it was his fault and asked that the misplay-—his first of the sea- son—be chalked against him. The scorer complied. FRISCH TRIES MUSIC 0 AROUSE HITTERS Frankie Frisch, manager of the Pirates, was very seriously consid- ering adding a harmonica player to his roster, but now he is not sure that even music hath charm. The mouthorgan maestro is a Chicagoan named Emmett Wig- gins, who organized a four-piece band in the Buc's Muncie (Ind.) Catcher Bill Salkeld, attempting to | field when neither Shortstop Bill | training camp two years ago while Jecuperating from an injury suf- fered in the Navy. Other members of the ensemble were Rip Sewell, bass fiddle; Bob Elliott, spoons, and Honus Wagner, hands. The | Pirates finished third that year, Frisch saw no relationship be- tween the hillbilly music and the extra-base hits that season, but things are different now, with the | Bucs averaging less than three ‘runs per game, | Arranges Concert | So when the Pirates landed in Chicago recently, Frisch called the | maestro and requested a concert, | Wiggins’ concern turned in a solo. Sewell was Florida-bound to recup- | erate from a sudden illness; Elliott | couldn’t find any spoons, and Wag- I ner had a bruised hand. Wiggins started with “Begin the 3eguine” for Frank Gustine, and | “Frisch yelled ‘Never mind him. He's batting .364. Concentrate on the outfielders,” He played ‘Coax Me A Little” for Ralph Kiner, fol- | lowed by “St. Louis Blues” for | Fritz Ostermueller, who just drop- ped a 1-0 decision to the Giants. Whether the music will have any effect on the Pirates cannot be proved immediately. THE MOST COMPLETE HOME FURNISHING STORE IN AMERICA!
