Alto and Cresson tubercu- losis sanatoriums were approved late last week by Gov. Edward Martin as one of the common- wealth’s first post-war construc- tion projects. The improvements include $238,- 250 at Mt. Alto, and $735,834 at | the Cresson institution, and mark the state’s initial step toward pro- viding greater accomodations for tubercular patients and to take care of a large waiting list which developed during the war. The State Health Department announced previously that a long | waiting list developed because of the help shortage. Bed space cur- rently is available to accomodate | at least 300 more patients if suf- | ficient doctors and nurses were available. This handicap was ex- pected to be overcome now that | the war has ended. The improvements at Mt. Alto will include a ground lighting sys- tem, new laundry equipment and an additional water supply. Cresson expenditures will enable the building of a nurses home, con- struction of quarters for male and female employes, improvement of sewage treatment plants ,construc- | tion of a new automatic refrigera- tion plant, construction of five cot- tages for married couples, includ- ing physicians, new floor for the | main kitchen and rebuilding of the | sanatorium piggery. Funds for the improvements | were provided by the 1945 Legis- lature, which appropriated $10,- 325,000 to the department for the | construction of buildings and other public works. None of the depart- ment’s other projects have as yet been approved.
