    CALLS OXYGEN USELESS
Profettor 8ays Old Theory Is Wrong
and Carbon Dioxide Is
Not Fatal.
Minneapolis. D. D. Mayne, princi
pal ot Minnesota school of agriculture,
announced the result of an experiment
which he believes has exploded the
old theory that oxygen was essential
to life and that death would result
Irom breathing carbon dioxide.
To demonstrate this theory, Prof.
Mayne confined a steer in a hermetic
ally sealed stall and another in an
open Btall. The first animal was Bhut
nir from oxygen completely and at the
end of several days was found to be
In as good condition as the other. The
experiment was repeated, the steers
exchanging stalls. The result was the
same both animals could Uve in the
hermetically sealed stall without oxy
;en and neither suffered poisoning
from carbon dioxide thrown out of
their lungs.
"The school ventilating system Is
unnecessary," asserted Prof. Mayne.

The Inventor of Ice Cream.
Dolly Madison was famous for her
feeauty, grace and social charm, but
he has never been given due credit
for her greatest achievement the in
rentlon of Ice cream. For the chron
iclers tell us that she was the first to
serve this national delicacy. The wife
of the president must have been a
wonderful woman, gifted in every
thing from diplomacy to cooking.
The men have long suspected that
some woman invented both ice cream
and matrimony, for men of genera
tions have ' been inveigled into both.
Let a boy end a girl go out walking,
Just anywhere, and suddenly the boy
will find himself face to face with a
soda fountain or an ice cream parlor.
It's just like a man who starts along
courting aimlessly who suddenly finds
bimself engaged. He doesn't under
stand just how it happened. But he
usually marches up bravely and finds
that he enjoys both matrimony and

Where Dwell the Thoughts.
An old maids' club in New Jersey

This ds generally the case with old

Doctor's Test of Food.
A doctor In Kansas experimented
with his boy In a test of food, and
gives the particulars. He says:
"I naturally watch the effect of
different foods on patients. My own
Jlttle son, a lad ot four, had been 111
with pneumonia, and during his con
valescence did not seem to care for
any kind of food.
"I knew something of Grape-Nuts
and Its rather fascinating flavour and
particularly of its nourishing and
nerve-building powers, so I started
the boy on Grape-Nuts and found
from the first dish that he liked It.
"His mother gave it to him stead
ily, and be began to Improve at once.
In less than a month ha had gained
about eight pounds and soon became
po well and strong we bad no further
anxiety about him.
"An old patient of mine, 73 years
old, came down with serious stomach
trouble, and before I was called had
got so weak he could eat almost
nothing, and was In a serious condi
tion. He had tried almost every
kind of food for the sick without
all.
"I Immediately put him on Grape-'
Huts, with good, rich milk and Just a
little pinch of sugar. He exclaimed
when I came next day, 'Why, doctor,
I never ate anything so good or that
made me feel so much stronger.' "
"I am pleased to Bay that he got
well on Grape-Nuts, but he had to
stick to It for two or three weeks,
then be began to branch out a little
with rice or an egg or two. He got
entirely well in spite of his almost
hopeless condition. He gained. 22
pounds In two months, which at his
age is remarkable.

MAHOMET V., WHO REIGNS, BUT
A "SLOW JOHN."
By Eliot Kays Stone. .
The Inhabitants of the Southern
mountains sometimes grind their corn
with an automatic miller known as
the "Slow John."
This contrivance Is very simple and
crude In form and workmanship, but
taking things slowly and easily and
working steadily, It turns out from
one to three bushels ot meal a day.
There are two varieties, the more
common one being constructed as fol
lows: A trough is fastened to one end of
a stout stick, and a perpendicular
beam to the other. The stick Is sup
ported In such a way as to make the
beam end remain down of its own
weight. But when water Is run Into
the trough end the weight ot the
water and trough combined makes
that end heavier than the beam or
hammer, whifh Is then lifted high
3
from the mortar in which it rests,
and which, contains the corn. As
the trough descends, the water runs
out, and then the weight of the ham
mer again brings it down Into the
mortar with great violence. This is
repeated day and night until the corn
Is ground, when the meal is taken out
and fresh corn put In Its place. An
other variety of "Slow John" Is op
erated by a water-wheel.
It can readily be seen that such an
automatic mill and miller is of great
value to a community where every
man Is needed In the field. Its cost
Is practically nothing. After the few
hours or days spent in Its construc
tion, no attention need be paid to It
beyond giving It something to do.
I havo never seen one ot these ma
chines save in a limited district In
North Carolina, Tennessee and Ken
tucky. That they exist there testifies,
I think, to the originality of these
secluded people, who have lived for
so many generations in their own
way, undisturbed by the shrill
whistle of advancing civilization.

New York. The tsetse fly, the In

public notice on the eve of Theodore
Roosevelt's departure for Africa, re

Rockefeller institute. Dr. S. J. Melt

announces that the dreaded sleeping
sickness is carried by the tsetse fly
only incidentally, that is, from one al

The microscopic organism has the
disease bound up in its system and
has heen exclusively used recently by
the Rockefeller institute to all the in
oculations of mice. The institute is
at work with a new serum for tthe
cure of the sleeping sickness, for
which it' has high, hopes, but no an
nouncement of its nature will be
made before next winter.
Since the sleeping sickness first
made its appearance in Uganda in
1901, 200,000 have died by It in one
district alone, and its toll from the
Congo Free State has been almost un
believably heavy.

"MEMOIRS OP DAN RICE," THH
CLOWN OV VVn uaumiH.
At Last, There is on Sale a Book
Ilrlmful of American Humor.
Any bookseller will tell' you that
the constant quest of his customers
Is for "a book which will make me
laugh." The bookman is compelled
to reply that the race of American
humorists has run out and comic lit
erature Is scarcer than funny plays.
A wide sale Is therefore predicted for
the "Memoirs of Dan Rice," the
Clown of Our Daddies, written by
Maria Ward Brown,, a book guar
anteed to make you roar with laugh
ter. The author presents to the pub
lic a volume of the great jester's
most pungent Jokes, comic harangues,
caustic hits upon men and manners,
lectures, anecdotes, sketches of ad
venture, original songs and poetical
effusions; wise and witty, serious,
satirical, and sentimental sayings of
the sawdust arena ot other days.
These "Memoirs" also contain a Berles
of adventures and incidents alternat
ing from grave to gay; descriptive
scenes and thrilling events; the rec
ord of half a century of a remarkable
life, in the course of which the sub
ject was brought Into contact with
most of the national celebrities of the
day. The book abounds In anecdotes,
humorous and otherwise; and It af
fords a clearer view of the inside
mysteries of show life than any ac
count heretofore published. Old Dan
Rice, as the proprietor of the famous
"One Horse Show," was more of a
national character than Artemus
Ward, and this volume contains the
humor which made the nation laugh
even while the great Civil War raged.
This fascinating book of 500 pages,
beautifully illustrated, will be sent
postpaid to you for $1.50. Address

Not In His Lifetime.
A well-known scientist was lectur
ing on the sun's heat, and In the
course of his remarks said: "It is an
established fact that the sun is grad
ually but surely losing its heat and in
the course of some 70,000,000 years It
will be exhausted; consequently this
world of ours will be dead and like
the moon, unable to support any form
of life."
At this Juncture a member of his
audience rose, in an excited manner,
and said:
"Pardon me, professor, but' how
many years did you say it would be
before this calamity overtakes us?"
The professor "Seventy million,
sir."
' "Thank God," was the reply. "I
thought you said seven millions."
