Simple Method liy Which tho Oil la Extracted From tlio Wood. "To make camphor," said a re turned traveler, "you put In chips at ono hole and out of another hole you draw the crude product In coarse while grains, liko Knit. "Wherever camphor trees grow you will And camphor distilleries. They are low buildings of mud brick and their odor is so aromatic that It can be detected two miles off. "In each building there are a dozen fires. On each fire 1b a kettle of boiling water, .with a perforated lid. Fitted to tho top of this kettle Is an Iron cylinder, filled with cam phor chips of the size of your little finger. Fitted to the top of the cylin der ts an empty Inverted jar. "There ts your whole apparatus a simple thing, which works simply. The steam of the boiling water pass ing up through the cylinder extracts from the camphor wood its oil. This oil, mounting still upward with the steam, settles like brine on the sides of the Inverted jar at the top. This brine, when the Are goes out, dries Into a substance like frost or snow. "White and aromatic, the frostlike substance Is the crude camphor. It Is scraped off tho sides of the jar and refined and pressed Into those attractive balls and cubes that you buy at a high price everywhere." Louisville Courier-Journal. Their Life is No Joke. Normandy and Brittany together are the land of legends and romance, but there is a noticeable difference In the people. The Breton is stalwart In stature and Btern and serious In dis position. He has hewed his life out amid the serious things and along the rocky roads. His bronzed face looks austere, but beneath his blue blouse beats a heart warm and true. The primitive simplicity of his life and the intcntness of his religion gives tho Breton short view of the frivoli ties of existence. He carries his re ligion into' his dally life and work aua along ajj tje roatis are gauay cru- clfijes wjilch the peasants never pass wltnout kneeling and crossing tuem se'iVes. It is characteristic of all these Brit tany folk that they mind their own business. I don't know what the re sult would be if you were to try a joke on them. I should be afraid to undertake it. Life Is a serious prob lem to the Broton. It is homespun for him, even though the rest oi France may be arrayed In silks. H has worked out an existence against great odds, and it has given him a character and physique which makei hlra notablo among his fellow coun trymen. He said he couldn't' af ford to take the paper and just had to do without it. He dropped in again last Saturday and planked down $1.60 for a year in advance and then heaved a big sigh of relief. Everything had gone wrong since the Farmer ceased to visit him. His chickens refused to lay, his cows got on tho alfalfa and died, and his hogs got tho cholera. The rats gnawed holes in his granary and his wheat ran out and tho birds ate It np. His wlndmjll blew over and killed a horse and his best shepherd dog got a bone in his throat and choked to death. His children got the measles and hla wife mashed her thumb in the wring er and couldn't do any housework. Thieves broke into his smokehouse and stole his winter's supply of meats and fire destroyed several stacks of his alfalfa. He bought groceries of a traveling faker and never got them, while his neighbor escaped because he read in the Farmer to watch out for crooks. His days were filled with misfortune and his nights with bad dreams. He stood it two months and then gave up the unequal struggle. From the Osborne Farmer. An Oath's Value. Clarence S. Darrow, the well known lawyer and essayist, discussing the Haywood trial, in which he played so prominent a part, said the other day: "Some of the evidence in that trial was so transparently false that it re minds me of a case that came off ;n Alabama a few years back. "One of the witnesses in this case was an extremely Ignorant man. As his testimony progressed his igno rance became so shockingly evident that the judge, looking sternly down on him, said: " 'Look here, sir, are you acquaint ed with the value of an oath?' "The witness answered anxiously: " 'Jedge, I hope I am. That tbar lawyer on yer left hand gimme alt dollars to aw'ar agin the other side. That's the correck value of art oath, ain't It, jedge?' Fifty Years of Steel Making. In 1857 the United States made 1, 000,000 tons of pis iron. This year's output will be about 25,000,000 tons. Fifty years ago the largest cargo of Iron ore taken down the great lakes was 340 tons, and pig iron, foundry No. 2, sold at 931. Better iron is sold today at 16. This season the Steel corporation's ships brought down cargoes of from 12,000 to 13,000 tons each and dis charged them at lower costs and in one-sixteenth the time required to unload the lake vessels of fifty years ago. Fifty years ago the- learned Sir Lowthian Bell, cae of the great iron masters of Great Britain, gave it for his opinion that the Lake Superior iron ore deposits would not be a fac tor of Importance in less than a cen tury. This season's downtake of iron ores from Great Lake ports will aggregate forty million tons, which is within eight million tons of the to tal export and import tonnage of the ports of London and Liverpool. A curious racial tendency has been shown lately In the new enlistment In the ranks of the United States army, at any rate so far as the work tit the recruiting stations in this city Is concerned. An unusually large number of Russians have been enlist ing for the service, the percentage sometimes funning tip to well above 50 per cent of the total enlistments. At one of the local recruiting sta tions in this city the officer In charge reported that out of 13 enlistments made In a single day last week, no less than six were Russians. On other days even this high percentage has been exceeded. "A large number of the Russians who are now enlisting in the United States army," said one of the re cruiting officers lately, "have already seen service In . the Russian army. I think It would be safe to say that 75 per cent of them have seen such service, and of those who have served In the Russian army nearly all were engaged In the recent conflict with Japan."
