With their sight temporarily impaired arid the epidermis peeling from their faces in great scales. Ethan E. Stewart and A. L. Spotts, two hardy mountain climbers of Seattle, have just returned from an ascent of Mt. Rainier, not only bearing the marks of the trip but bringing back several important ob servations for the benefit of others who would essay the climb. "It made us tired having it rubbed into us that residents of other cities were making the ascent of Rainier, but that Seattle's registrations at the top were few and far between. So we de cided to register 'from Seattle' in the scroll left for that purpose by the Sierra Club," said Mr. Stewart, in telling of the spirit that moved him and his com penion to make' the climb. Camp Muir was left last Friday morn ing at 4.47 o'clock and the summit and crater was attained at 10.30 o'clock. This is pretty nearly the record time. After registering their names the climbers proceeded to a two hours' en joyment of the situation and prospeot. To the south the view was very clear and the men looked down into the crater of Mt. Hood, miles and miles away. The snow was leaving the mountain rapidly and the craters were widening out. The avalanches were "something tremendous," declared Mr. Stewart. From his observations, the climber says that the ascent should be made earlier In the year. Danger from falling rocks and avalanches is at its greatest height just at present. The return to Camp Muir was made between 6 and 6 o'clock. "We succeed ed in dodging the rocks as we came down," said Mr. Stewart, "but it is a hazardons trip and should never be at tempted until later in the afternoon, after the sun has ceased to melt the enow and liberate ereiu bodies of it and rocks. One ought to leave Camp Muir at 4 o'clock a. m. and, returning, leave Gibraltar not earlier than 4 30 p. m." The above article was clipped from a Seattle, Wash., daily of August 7. The altitude of Mount Rainier Is 14,528 feet. Mr. Stewart was formerly a citizen of Reynoldsville. The End of the World Of troubles that, robbed E. The tobacco makes only one stop on the way at the factory where it is turned into cigars. It pays only one smalt far lor the , whole trip. It used to go in a roundabout way, from planter to leaf-broker, from broker to cigar-maker, from cigar-maker to cigar-jobber, from cigar-jobber to retailer, from retailer to you. It paid a fare that is, another profit at every stage. .' ' The National Cigar Stands' plan saves four stages and four fares. And when these imita tions are sold as white lead, the consumer is deceived into paying white lead prices for worthless substitutes.
