Among the feathered Inhabitants of New Zealand there Is a bird called the parson bird, or 'till." It is about the size and shape of a blackbird, but has a pair of delicate white tufts at Its throat and Is a glossy dark green oth erwise, which looks black In tho sun shine. It can be taught to crow, to speak, to whistle tunes, and, besides these tricks, It has a repertory which is not often equaled by any other fenthered songster. At vespers it has n note like the toll of a bell or the clear, high note of an organ. It enn mimic every bird in the bush to per fection. It will break off In the mlddlo of an exquisite melody and indulge In a strange melody of sounds which nre Impossible to describe, but If you can imagine "tho combination of n cough, a laugh, a sneeze, with the smashing of a pane of glass," It will be some ap proach to the idea. Tho "till" nests twice or thrlco a year and has large families. Like the other birds of New Zealand, It seems to be unconscious of danger from ninn. It Is n pity that the birds of this Island nre becoming so senrce, for they speak to us of a time when nature wns harm less, whin the snakes, tigers and fal cons did not exist. "Ole I s 11 Lend." Dean ITole In his book, "S.'ore Memo ries," tells an amusing story of how an old woman got tho better of her clergy man In ni argument. The village churchyard was overcrowded except on it 1 sunless northern side, In which the suicide was burled. One day the vicar, while visiting n poor old woman who was nigh unto death, thought he would try to get her consent to be burled In ihe roomy northern plot. He began by assuring her that the common aversion to burial In any particular portion of onsecrated ground was a silly preju dice and a foolish superstition. Then he besought her, ns 11 personal favor to himself and as nu example to others, to permit her body to be burled In tho northern plot of the churchyard. The old woman thought it all over for a few minutes nnd then answered, "Well, sir, as you seem to think us one part of the churchyard is as good as another and that It makes no difference where wo be put, perhaps you'll gle us a lead." Tlio vicar did not grasp tho argu ment, but he changed the subject. A nisniinoftitliiB; Ccle'trHr.
