There Is no place in the circus for performers who fall. Kveu ths clowns look a little bit seri ous behind the scenes. Hut perhaps that Is only because the black lines they paint on their whllencd vlsiices are always so kIuui and solemn. And what a wilderness of fun iiuiUlnir peo ple there are In Hie Inltcr day circus the llunipkln, the I.oim, the I laiii'ipiln, Hie (Jrliniicer, the Merry Andrew, the Austrian Looby, the Zany, the Pierrot, the Punch, (be Motley Pool and Dually the (ionium Hroad Pace, whose nninu Is Paddy lliirke! , One of the clowns was slttiiiK on his trunk In Hie ilress liitf rootii llckliiK a stick of black paint and I'tilibliiK It on his cheeks so as to make n most funereal expression. TRUTH OR PARADOX? Life, levels all men; death reveals the eminent. . Liberty means responsibility. That Is why most men dread It. While we have prisons It matters lit tle which of us occupy the cells. Titles distinguish the mediocre, em barrass the superior and are disgraced by the Inferior. Democracy substitutes election by the incompetent many for appointment 1y the corrupt few. Do not do unto others as you would that they should do unto you. Their tastes may not be the same. Your word can never be as gocVl as your bond, because your memory can never be as trustworthy as your honor. If you strike a child take cure that you strike it In anger, even ut the risk of maiming It for life. A blow In cold blood neither can nor should be forgiv en. From (ieorge Bernard Sbuw's "Man and Superman." ANIMALS' WANDERINGS. l-iuiilrr Mount anil Town Itlitune Fa hie SltiH Fniiniliillon III Knot. The fable of the country mouse and the town mouse has a foundation In fact. Mice occasluiiiijly migrate In large numbers when food grows prune anil travel considerable distances to fresh houses. Parmers In a part of Perth shire had a onil reason t hecoutn nware of this fact when a couple of years ago vast swarms of luh e Invaded llielr ciu nllelils at harvest tin e. ltnl the lyniise only travel when It I ins to. The rat, on tli" contrary, seems to lake n yearly outing. In very, much the same fashion as il i human brings. Hals are the most migratory erealures In the world. Troops of ruts leave the towns at the clid of summer mil spend a mouth or two in the country, appar ently In order to enjoy the change of food which the country n fiords at that time of Hits year In the way of fl'esh fruit and grain. Ilefore the cold weath er sets In they are all back again lu tliclr old iliai'teis. Itelndecr migrate with the same reg ularlly as swallows. They move south when wilder sets In, but as kooii as ev er the snow begins to melt I hey travel steadily north, sometimes for as much as a thousand miles. To end a holiday by ilelllierale sui cide is so strange a phenomenon that for a long time naturalists looked upon the stories of the migration of Hie lem mings as an improbable llctlon. Yet I lie facts are beyond dispute. At Irregular Intervals these rntllke creatures start out from their homes in the fastnesses of northern Neanilluavhi In huge droves numbering tens of thousands and trav el steadily southward. Iicath pursues them In a hundred forms. I lawks and other birds of prey hover above them. Thousands are drowned In rivers. Yet the rest struggle on until they reach the sea. They do not stop. They plunge In, swim out and struggle on until at last llielr slrenglh fails and they drown. Not one ever returns from this Journey of ilcolh.-London Answers, COTTON IN A FABRIC. I'liKEleri liy llio I.aiv. The librarian of the Congressional li brary tells a story of a coiorcd man who came Into the library mid asked one of the assistants for a "good law book." lie explained that one of his neighbors intended to sue him and he wanted to get a book so he could tlnd out the law. The clerk gave him a copy of a book called "Every Man Ills Own Lawyer." The colored man sat down nt one of the dusks and turned the pages of the book for nn hour. Worsted clolhs are less often adulter ated than woolens and are more easily delected. A cotton worsted Is a lie on the face of It, for the cotton iilanils out with prominence. Hut often a col Ion thread Is twisted with n worsted thread, and to determine Its presence it Is only necessary to take the twist out of the thread and then examine Its component parts. Col Ion, having a long staple, can bo carded and combed Willi wool to bo spun Into worsted yarn. This Is dono to cheapen the cost of production. Cot ton Is carded and spun with wool and shoddy, not so much to cheapen the yarn, for cotton Is generally as expen sive as sonic Bhoddics, but Is Intro duced to give strength or spinning qualities to the stock. In ninny cases the shoddy Is of such short staple that it would not stand the drawing In spinning, and, as It -would make the cost of the yarn too high to put In enough wool to give that lacking Btrcnglh, cotton Is put In for this pur pose. The percentage of cotton In n fabric can be determined In this manner: Take a small piece of cloth and weigh It. Now boil It for live minutes In a 5 per cent solution of caustic soda. Take out what is left, and, i'f any, it Is all cotton. The wool will all be dissolved. The percentage of shoddy cannot be de termined except by experience. A clotli or yarn with shoddy In It is easily detected by Its feel. Cloth made of all new wool Is softer feeling than one containing shoddy, for the latter has lost that new, soft, springy feel peculiar to wool. American Wool and Cotton Reporter. The Tools of Gcnlim. Some of the greatest discoveries In physics and chemistry have been, made with the simplest forms of apparatus and under the most modest conditions of laboratory equipment One need only recall the achievements of the famous John Dalton and In later time of Sir Gabriel Stokes to Illustrate the point. As regards the latter, a comment of Lord Knyleigh Is of interest. Stokes' .experimental work, he says, was exe cuted with the most modest appliances. Many of hlg discoveries were made in a narrow passage behind the pantry of his bouse, Into the window of which he bad a shutter fixed with a slit In It and a bracket on which to place crystals and prisms.
