Lucius W. Robinson, Pres. George L. Eaton, Seo. A Great Year for the Farm' rs. Speaker Cannon's dosorlptli n of the, American farmer as "just plumb pros perous' Is substantially cunllrmed by the eighth annual report of Secretary Wilson of the Department of Agricul ture. It was a year of record produc tion In nearly all lines, the total farm products of the country reaching the colossal turn of almost five billions. The only comparison which the joyful Secretary can make Is with the national debt and what tho farmers con. d do to that with the value of their crops, if they got It all, staggers the Imagina tion. The corn crop alone would pay the entire national debt, a year's Interest besides and have enough left to make a good start toward improving the Ohio river. The great American hen lays enough eggs In a month to pay a year's Interest on the public debt. Tho farm products for two years, says the Secre tary, equal the output of all tho gold mines of all tho world since Columbus discovered America. They amount to more than six times the capital stock of all the national banks and luck but' a miserly three-quarters of a billion of the value of all the manufactures, ex clusive of raw material. They are three times the gross earnings of all the railroads and four tunes ' tho value of all the materials. As If this were not enough, Mr. Wilson points to the banks In the farming States, showing heaped-up deposits and overgrowing lists of depositors. It was certainly a great year for the farmer. If he fell down In supplying wheat, cattle, sheep and hogs the de cline was so slight, especially In beef, as to acquit him of the responsibility for high prices, which continues to rest with the enjoined beef trust.
