The farmers of not only JofTsrsnn county but all counties In tho State are deeply Interested In the work of the LoglHluture. Somo legislation hag already been dono to tbclr Interests but Btill there Is much yet to bo done. It Is net always that thoy bavo a represen tative In the Legislature who can under stand their needs as well as tho former himself pan. Tho mail who has tilled the soil from his youth up, who owns the land he tills, who knows the hard ships as well as the pleasures of furm life, who is Intelligent, tint! withal a successful fai'mar,. can appreciate the farmer's attitude toward legislation that is detrimental to the farmer's interest and be can then quite Intelligently understand what Is good legislation for the farmer better than a man who has nevor followed the plow or reaped the grain. The attention of tho farmers in Jefferson county Is called to the fact that Mr. S. T. North, cadldato for Assembly, has been raised on a farm and he knows the Ins and outs of farm life its hardships and struggles to subdue the soil and make it profitable to the owner. Notwithstanding the fact that he is a "horny banded son of toil" be has acquired a gonoral public, school education and has spent many months In the school room as a teacher. He has the qualification and good common sense so essential in the mak . lng of a representative for tho people that none need hesitate about casting his vote for him on February 16, Punx sutawney .A'eirs. The geography but a few decades back spoke of Africa as a vast continent of negroes, and malaria, impassable deserts and unexplored jungles, fierce wild beasts and snakes innumerable, a good place to avoid. To-day it Is about the most Interesting continent on the face of the globe. From the shores of the Mediterranean to the rocks of Good Hope it is toeming with vast projects of Improvement. Every government in Europe is striving to expand its in fluence there, and tho white man, though not In the majority by a good deal, is master of all. Cecil Rhodos, whom history will some day crown with laurels of glory, set on foot the project of building a railroad of fabulous length from Egypt to the Cape, through the wildest and most unknown part of Africa. While its construction was going on, one of tho most notable of historic events took place there, when a whole people were subjugated and the nation of the Transvaal ceased to be. , In the desert of Sahara, least romantic of ' placoB, one of the most romantic comedlcB of the ages is now being played. A young French million aire, with money to burn, has gone to the shores of the ocean and desert and crowned himsolf the king of all be surveys. Jacquos the First he styles himself, and his daring is drawing many 'followers to bis semi-barbarous court. On the other side of this same desert rules Menelik, he whom the United States recently mudo a treaty with, and calls himself a literal descendant of the blbtcal Solomon, wisest, of men. What America was to the sixteenth century, Africa will be to the twentieth. Escaped an Awful Death, Mrs. H. It has been announced in Thk STAR and other papers that Senator John S. Fisher, of Indiana, would not have op position In this district for the Repub lican nomination for Senator, but such a stntomnnt was made too soon, as an other candidate, M. C. Watson, Esq., of Indiana, has announced. The Punx- tawnoy Spirit has the following to say about the matter : "For many years the counties of In diana and Jefferson were at loggerheads on this question of tho State Senator ship. There was constant bitterness and strife, which did not stop wlib the primary election but was carried Into tho contest in the fall, when all Repub licans should bo united. As a result there wss no certainty, notwithstanding the large Republican majority, of the election of the Republican candidate. On several occasions independent can didates were elected, once a Dotnocrat was chosen, and at another timo the Democrats came within a doen votes or so of electing their candidate. Now this wasacondltion of affairs very much to be desired by the opposing party, but very unwholesome to the Republican party. Recognizing these facts twolv years ago, in deference to popular sen timent, an understanding was had be tween the Republicans of both counties that the State Senatorship should alter nate between them, two terms to a county. Indiana county carried out its part of the arraugomunt In good faith, and we have started in to do the same thing. Senator Fisher was presented to us four years ago as tho choice of Indiana county, and is a candidate for ro-electlon. We have every reason to believe he is still the choice of a large majority of Indianacounty Republicans. 'Under these circumstances, as a matter of honor and good faith between men, in the interest of trained and ef ficient public service, as a matter of civic pride, tho intelligent and patriotic voters of Jefferson county will recognize that tbey have but ene course to pursue. Tho object in alternating the sonator ship eight years to a county instead of four, is to give the district the advan tage of trained service, itboingwell un derstood that perpotual apprenticeship in legislative offices is very undesirable. To give the office to two different men during the eight years would be to de feat the purpose for which the eight year arrangement was made, and unless tho incumbent has proven derelict and unworthy, he should undoubtedly have the indorsement of a re-election. "Senator Fisber is a bright, clean, able and conscientious young man. That he made no mistakes Is not prob able. He would not be human else. Dut tho whole trend and compass of bis official conduct has been such as to in dicate that he can bo relied upon to support and defend American institu tions and uphold that which is right, and for the best Interests of bis con stituents. He is in every way worthy and creditable to the district, and the Republicans of Jefforson county cannot better attest their sense of justice and good fajth and their appreciation of the general fitness of things than by giving Sonator Fisher an emphatlo endorse ment for a second term." Valuable Church Property. Last Sunday Rev. Father McGlvney read the annual financial report of his church, showing a balanoe on band of $0,000, of which $3,000 was contributed by the fair. This sum will be devoted to the building of the new convent as soon as spring epens. When the con vent is completed, Father McGlvney said the DuBcls congregation will have the finest group of church property in the Erie diocese, consisting of four fine buildings, the church, the school, the parochial residence and the convent, and all without debt. The property is a monument to the ability and zeal of the resident priest. DuBois Search light. School Report. McDonald, the noted lumberman of Roynoldsvllle, says a piece of woods Is big, you can depend upon It that it Is not a brush pile. When the United States Leather Company first wrete to Mr. McDonald about doing some contract lumbering for them up In Bradford county, he wrote them jokingly that ho might go and "look at it If it was not a brush pllo," and tho company answered that tbey would pay all expenses of the trip, If It was not the "largest brush pile that he had ever seen." When Mr. McDonald arrived at the property he found a little over fifteen thousand acres of virgin ttmberlands without a stick having been cut from tho tract. He took a contract for two years cutting to "put in all he could" and you may know that from Mr. McDonald's way of doing things, that means no small amount ; but he says the deep snow is greatly hampering them in their work, It being over 38 inches deep. The timber off this Immense tract all goes to Laquln, to be there manufactured into lumber by Mr. W. L. Barclay, who has the sawing contract. Besides these fifteen thousand acres owned by the United States Leather Company, the same company own In the same county of Bradford over five hundred million feet of hemlock. Falls Creek lkruhl.
