Held in the BaplIM Chmch at Sykcsville
Saturday Interesting Institute.
Tlio DUtilot institute fonvriimJ in
Iho UnptiBt church it Sykcavlllo Snt
urilay, Fob. ". On account of extreme
cold tho member did not arrive until
lato nnd It wan not until 11.00 a. ni. that
an organization was effected. onioors
worn then elected a follows: Presi
dent, P. T. McCluro; vlee-oivHliloni,
Jos. Wilson; secretary, Jessie Smeltor.
Mr. Heed opened the meeting hy rend
ing the lltth Ps., and leading In prayer.
After singing "America." Miss Arrow
smith road a paper on "Teaching Arith
metic." To her rules are objectionable
only when mechanical comprehension Is
half the science. The three conditions
of the subject are comprehension, ex
pression, and fixing of thought. She
gave devices to bo used In teaching, hut
every teacher should have original de
vices. Tho remainder of the morning
session whs devoted to a general dis
cussion, participated In hy Messrs Me
Clurc, Wilson, Miller, Golst and Good,
and by Misses Lcnkard and Stutchel.
Quite a discussion of the multiplication
table, was Indulged In and a final de
cision reached that, as multiplication Is
shortened addition, It should be taught
as addition and the tables thoroughly
learned.
The thought was given by Mr. Gelnt
that pupils should devoto their time up
to tho age of 12 to learning the four
fundamental processes, but discussion
brought out tho idea that ago cannot
bo taken as a standard, tho ability of the
pupil determines his progress. How
ever, a good foundation Is tho great
essential.
Adjourned for noon Intermission.
At 1.45 the afternoon session was
opened by singing, and Miss Margaret
Dalley then read a paper on "Tho Edu
cational Value of Literature." Sho ad
vanced tho Idea that liternturo Is an aid
in reaching the aim of education; it
makes boys manly, and girls womanly.
It enables the student to read character;
it takes away narrowness of thought,
and gives ability to appreciate real
greatness; it teaches the real value of
life. Rov. V. A. Iteno and Jos. Wilson
poke briefly on tho subject.
K. M. Smith then took up tho subject
assigned him, ' How to study and teach
History." Tho subject was well han
dled, his main thought being tho teach
ing of facts that stand In relation. Tho
Articles of Confederation and tho Con
stitution should be introduced when the
period of history is reached in which
they were a necessity. The science of
. history should bo taught after tho
period of reflection has been reached.
Vtrious text books should bo used. W.
