The men are drifting away from the Window Glaus Workers Association, of which Simon Burns is president, and are accepting the scale and joining hands with the other trades in the Independent plants. Tho window glans flatlenera have re ported tho only break in their ranks, which is given out in a circular totter issued by President Goorge L. Cake. The men number lour. They are named and Mr. Cake say that they broke away and went to work in tho factory of the Camp Glass company at Smothport. The Smethport Window Glass Com pany has been standing with the Inde pendent Window Glass Manufacturers' association and refused to sign the scale of President Simon Burns. The result was the blowers and gatherers there re fused to work. Yesterday tho 'Company secured a largo number of blowers from the new L. A. 300 orgunication, who were at Kano,. waiting for the plants there to begin. Tho Smethport works then began blowing gluss at once. They have a full force of flHtteners and cut ters also. A dispatch from Kane last night says that tho nomblno factory thero, which has (Hi pots, has only 1(1 blowers at work and three ilattoners. Throughout the entire district of Kane it is said that the independent manufac turers are working without a hitch and have all the men they need." The presence of a Burns representative in our town, und tho liberal use of hisfat. pneketbook, hud some effect upon the men whom I hud under contract, and IK of them showed the while feuther and left us, but in spite of this we started with 18 blowers und a full crew of Hat tellers and cutters. IDITORIAL BTAfr. tdltu-lt-Chur Trti Smith. AfiiiUnt E4iUr-0al Elag. Laial Klitar Tbamaa Holaa. Last Wednesday morning the school had the pleasure of listening to u talk by the Hon. S. B. Klllott. Like his characteristic discussions it was as fresh as tho flowers ho brought from his garden with which to Illustrate the point that bo presented. lie took for his themo tho question, "Is Color a Sub stance?'1 Ho Introduced It by speaking of a discussion that occurred In front of his resldeneo between two passcrs-hy one morning recently. Tho conclusion reached by the two, wus: that color Is as much a matter of fact when the moon fails to give her light and utter darkness covers the earth, as when tho earth is enlivened anil brightened by the noonday sun. Mr. Klllott then made the statement, that, color is not a substance, but Is an effect produced on our nerves of sight by only certain ray of light coming to our eyes. This muy bo caused by a part only belnjf ullowed to come through ft substance, or by a part being reflected back to our eyes from some body, TTu then gftvo some very beautiful ex amples, using flower brought from his garden. Ho first, however, gave the three primary colors and the four most common combinations, showing how all were separated by means of the prism. He first took n sunflower with a brown center, and showed how we see its yel low color of the outer circle, as that alone Is reflected back to us after the flower has absorbed the other elements of light: of the brown center we get the brown us thn unused part of the light reflected by that part of the plant. Tho next flower presented for our inspection was the Zinnlo. He Indicat ed how its white reflected every element of light. Its orange-colored flowers re fl -cted part of the red and part of the yellow, absorbing tho rest. He contin ued further with his Illustrations, using iihimunda, feverfew, white and pink chin u asters, aehyruntlies, partl-coloivd begenias, and yellow and white abut.ilon, forming In till, u very pleasant trip through garden, science and color, Mr. Elliott then went on to state 'tis possible, even probable and In fact It Is certain that man may be ablo to deter mine the number ttf elements in the sun, to the number of forty or fifty, with as much certainty as we deter mine the color of a fine horse or a new dress. This is dnno by means of the spectroscope, and the knowledge of Its use. Mr. Elliott's remarks were hear tily received ami upon tho Invitation of Prof. Lenkerd, made while Mr. Klllott was yet on the rostrum, ho promised to further develop the subject of light and color at some early period by means of the school apparatus. LOCALS. Clement Flynn started to school last Monday morning. A morry-iro-round has been In town for the last week and it scorned to at tract the young ladies' attention, espe cially In the evening. The young doctor has been neglecting his business when he ought to bo at his oflloo, but I guess tho Boulevard has more or losa of an attraction to most of the young people of the school. Last week a couple of young damsels of tho room fixed their pretty golden hair in some new fungled knot to try to make an impression upon tho young men of tho mora, but their efforts proved futile.
