Who the Murdered Man Was and Who Committed the Crime is Not Positively Known Yet. A raimlor wns ciimmittoil In Wnh Jnirton township, near Fulls Creek, lust Weduesduy niht and the small house whore the crime wu committed whs hiimnvt down to uoneoul tho awful deed. Whether It was .lumen Nulton, who Icved In the house, or Miehuel Simmons, or onj either mini, that was murdered W not positively known, nor is It known who did the killing. Mrs. Nullon, who knows all about tho crime, hns told three or four different stories about It, arx), hence, there is doubt as to which story Is correct. According to the woman's lust story, her husband shot Michael Simmons, of DuDois, in sclf- defense, cut his head otT with an H.x and thon set tiro to the liouso to cover up tho crime. There Is ono thinu sure and that is that tho charred body of u man without heud, hands or feet was found In tho ruins on Thursday and Mrs. Nulton. who was found at DuOois. had not told of the murder and burning of house un til she was asked concerning tho matter. The gonenl belief is that it was Nulton who was murdered and not Simmons. An inquest was held Thursday and the verdict of the jury was that Michael Simmons came to his death at the lands of .Tamos Nulton, who killed him !n self-defense,. Mrs. Nulton and her bnithor, Charles Want., aged sixteen years, who wore at the house when the murder was committed, were dis charged. Oil City Derrick's Opinion of Smith. There seems to he a disposition on the pttrt of some of tho Indiana, county "newspapers to Insist upon the re-election of Hon. Summers M. Jack to Con gress from this district. We are in cltnod to think that tho newspapers agi tating the second term for Mr. Jack are doing so on their own honk, as it Is well known that this is Jefferson county's term for Congressman and also that tlnjro wus an understanding that Indiana was "to get the nomination for Slate Senntor and .TefTorson county the district nomi nation, and it Is the expectation of tho people that Hon. W. O. Smith will bo given the nomination. As Thk Star has always been a strong supporter of the friend of our youth, Hon. W. O. Smith, there Is a satisfaction in know ing that there are others who agree with us in regard to his ability, and we clip tho following from the Oil City Jtfrrick: "Hon. W. O. Smith, of Punxsutaw noy, is tho choice of the Uepubll vx voters of Jefferson county for Keprvsontutivo in Congress. The selection Is a most happy ono. At the primaries lie received a total of TI.T2 to his opponent's l.'iTd. This, how ever, fails to measure the popularity of Editor Smith, who is one of the favored us well as the favorite sons of Jefferson 4unty. Mr. Smith has served four 'terms in tho Legislature, and is one of the most thoroughly equipped men for Congress in tho Stuto. Ho is a quiet .ana unassuming worker, whose voice Is never raised In noisy demonstration for the purpose of attracting attention or exciting contention. When it speaks he n foreiblo and to the point. He be eves In doing something all tho time that will redound to the bonofit of tho constituents rather than spending un necessary time in useless and prolonged dulxito. As the editor of tho Punxsu- tawney Spirit Mr. Smith has exerted a wide inlluonco for years, and his work in the Legislature has stamped him as practical and valuable man in the con duct ( btute affairs. His presence in tti halls of Congress will be an honor to the press of tho country at large as well as u oredit to his native State. He w ono of the best Representatives .iniierson county over had in tho Lib luture, and his district has done well In V'ucing hlra in tho pathway of promO' rtion and further honors." Economy.
