That all of the High School gallants have not assumed complete control of that organ which causes tho face to redden and make a fellow feel like seeking some place of contentment, was very clearly demonstrated last week as our "pretty" black haired Sub assumed that purple tint to Its highest degree of brilliancy when called upon to aaslst one of our learned Seniors In her work. The program rondered last Friday In literary society was very interesting, It consisted of recitations by Sal lie Montgomery, Sophia Ileckman, Efllo Mohney, Alice Evans, Maud Bush and Edward Foster, and an essay by Ira Bowser. The violin solo by Etholyn Winslow and vocal solo by Florence Stone showed talont as well as practice, and an oration given by Harry Herpol In his usual pleasing manner ended tho program; A Fiendish Attack. An attack was lately made on C. F, Collier of Cherokee, Iowa, that nearly proved fatal. It came through his kid' neys. His back got so lame he could not fetoop without great pain, nor sit In a chair except propped by cushions. Coal Trade Journal. 1 In soft coal there Is an easier feeling In all the markets, which offers occasion for remark when one recalls the high pressure of tho winter season, and ton1 nagc can bo had at less figures than pre vailed when the grand boom was on and everyone was talking "famine" simply because their Immediate wants could not be supplied promptly; there was thus a speculative clement Introduced Into tho trade, and the result was that some people paid a high figure for tholr supplies and there are some jobbers who are caught with a tonnage that cost more thun rates now current. None of the larger firms went Into this thing, but continued to take care of their reg ular trado, and they are now In shape for an equitable, reciprocal arrangement with these same customers. New prices for the season are to be higher than were those of last year; as we have heretofore said, Hits is due to higher prices for mining, Increased railroad charges and a profit to the consumers. The storm caused a serious delay In tho delivery of coal to Buffalo with tho result that some of the districts depend ing on this market are unable to get what they wanted in tho lino of soft coal, much to their regret. The weath er has opened again, however, and tho shippers expect within a few days to have plenty of coal in sight. Tho freight agents of the bituminous coal roads met at Buffalo last week and fixed the freight rate from tho Pitts burg district at 81.15 per ton and from Reynoldsville and Allegheny river points at (1.00.
