It haa been our observation, and wo have given tho matter considerable attention, that these now Industries which ronio begging for land and cash bonuses to help them Ret started, do not, as a rule, ainoiint to miioh to tho coiiminities in which thoy locate. Tuke the hip, prosperous industries of this valley, and you will find that nearly all of thorn bought tholr sites and estab lished themselves on tholr own capital. Kli.abeth 1! mill. Good sense that, Hlehard! When a man strikes you for a nieklo or a quar ter ho is a beggar, but lieggnry, like thoft, increases In respectability in pro portion to tho amount asked for. Free port Juitnuil. Last Thursday there was a young man In town, whoso body was somewhat twisted and ho was very lamo, that was seeking aid by tho sale of a "good luck" card with three or four verses of poetry on it. Tho young man had a woo-begono expression, which would naturally touch a sympathetic cord in human nature, that was tho moans of many a nickel being dropped into his dirty hand. Tho lameness was spasmodic and only affected him whon ho was bog ging. At other times he could walk without limping much. This young man gathered in tho nickels in the manner abovo stated and then joined two other dirty looking tramps behind a box cur near the A. V. R'y crossing In West Roynoldsville whore thoy car ried beer by tho bucket full until they were very muchly Intoxicated. Two of the tramps hnd begged bread and but ter for the trio, while the other fellow played tho cripple act and secured enough money for all to got drunk. Thus the charitably inclined are ever Hnd anon imposed upon by vagabonds. Tho annual report of the state bureau of mines shows that 52,802,f!MI not tons of anthracite coal were produced in the stato last year, and 64,247,035 tons of bituminous, an aggregate of 117,050,231 net tons, an increase of 0,71)4, 623 tons over last year. There wore also pro duced lust year 10,171,!2O tons ofcoko, an inoreuso of l,H38,72i). Tho number of persons employed in the bituminous mines last year was 87,802, an Increase of 1,319. During the year 2,232 acci dents occurod, of which (ton were fatal. Forty-one per cent, of the fatal acci dents resulted from carelessness or vio lation of the mine laws by' the victims, and 43 por cent, of the non-futal acci dents from tho same cause. Reports furnished by the ten Inspectors of bi tuminous mines last year show that the eoal in 323 mines is. owned by the oper ator end that in forty-one mines it is partly leased and partly owned. Ven tilation is produced in 288 mines by furnaces, in 2H8 by funs, in three by steam and in thirty-four by natural means. The outlook now Is that before many years Englnnd will have to come to the United States and Pennsylvania for her supply of coal, unless, indeed, she can discover some substitute for use as fuel to keep her many Industries going. This oplnioii was freely ex pressed ut the English Institute of Min ing Engineers, at which the subject of exhaustion of the coal fields was dis cussed. At present the annual output of England Is 200,000,000 tuns, but the decrease In production is such every year thut hulf a century is given as the ' limit when tho supply will cease. Then cornea an end to hor manufacturing supromaoy. This country would be correspondingly benefited. .The giving out of her coal mines would at once solve the "smoke problem" for England but to hor great pecuniary damage. It is possible, of course, that a way uiuy be discovered to make electricity, de veloped by' chemical action, do the work of steam, but under conditions , now existing coal Is necessary for all Importaut Industrial operation. In this oountry, It la reassuring to luurn, tho supply of coal. display no signs of becoming exhausted, Even the veins , now being worked, not allowing for the . discovery of now ones, ure good for 300 yours more, ut least. If England wants to buy coul she knows where to come for It. And Pennsylvania will reap do inconsiderable share of tho profits. Pittsburg Dally AW, . ' ' Clarion District Appointments.
