Think, what right have you to bo scornful, whose virtue is a deficiency of temptation, whoso success may be an ancestor's accident, whose prosperity Is very likely a satire! Thackeray. D. B. Helner has not yet been appoin ted United States District Attorney for Western Pennsylvania, but Harry Alvan Hall has been ro-appointcd to continue in that office during the inter val that may elapse until such time as President McKinloy may decide to till the office otherwise Ed. A. Carmalt, of Hrookvlllo, is the man who should be appointed to fill that office A man over In Potter county who, no doubt, has read in some paper that there were a number of new houses be ing built at Dig Soldier, jumped at the conclusion that It is quite a large town, and wrote to a party in Reynoldsvllle last week inquiring how many stores, industries, doctors, Sat., were located at Big Soldier, and what population the town has. At present Big Soldier is a small mining town and the wants of tho citizens are supplied almost entirely from the Jefferson Supply Co. store of this place and the sick are looked after by Reynoldsvllle, Rathraol and Sykcs ville doctors. Are you doing anything to build up Reynoldsvllle, or are you sitting with folded hands croaking that thore Is no business, no prospects for business and that the town la dead? Wherever there is life there is hope. The town has various advantages, but they must be helped along. There should be a meeting of all the people Interested in the future welfare of this town to talk over matters and devise some plan to instill more life into the business veins of the town by Inducing some kind of establishments to locate here of organ ire a stock company and start some thing ourselves. Only the few, in comparison, are rich and the masses are poor. We who have littlo ought not to complain. Doubtless Provldonoe is doing for us the vory bost possible. No doubt we are given all we are competent to manage properly, and all that we could make good use of. Let us learn to be content with what we have, and If we prove worthy of more it will doubtless be given us. Brookvllle Democrat. Thore are few, if any, who believe that they have all they are competent to manage properly. It is not human nature to think that way. It is true that we should loam to be content with what we have, but at the same time we should not sit down and fold our hands, but should strive by all honorable means to get more of this world's goods. There are many varieties of frauds and shams wherewith mankind are de ceived, and the meanest of all frauds is the sanctimonious fraud. This type of fraud is that which was known of old time as the Pharasee, who stood forth in the market place, smote his breast, and thanked God he was not as wicked as other men. The modern Pharasee, of which we have recently bad numerous conspicuous examples, would make him self appear large by knocking everybody else prostrate. He would make himself appear clean by besmirching others. That is not manly. A true man only rises to bis full height when he stoops to lift the fallen. The man who de nounces another as a thief is probably only envious of the other fellow's oppor tunities to steal. . There is no more con temptible human creature than the al leged man who Is willing to gaiu noto riety by becoming a scavenger bird, nos ing around after foulnoot and smelling it afar off. It is better to assume the character of a defender than a traduoer. The former is Invariably an honest man, the latter always a ohloken-iivered mi tltof 1'i.nuUwney fyrtrit. Public School Laws.
