BOMBSHELL'S BftAVE UEEO. the Io( KnTi.it Two Lit tin Children From Seiiout Itangnr. Whilo n gnu wns bolnfl lonrlpj Bomh shnll would ait ou tii parapet nml Watch the opnrntiou. That flnihhod, he would Jntiip np nrl look out to ea over the rone end then scamper down from the pnrnpet nnd follow nn Into the bomb proof. As usual, Bombshell wns on hnud to boo the tost of tho now big gun He superintended the londing, nnd Whilo 1 wan nimiiiH tho Run he looked over the range an curufollv as did the lookout, and from his air of respotisibil itT one might have supposed that to him had bwn intrnMeil the duty of seeing tbnt the range was clear. But when wo slatted for tho bomb proof, instead of following ns, as was his enctom, Bombshell remained on the parapet, looking out to sen anil mnflliitf the air. Iu n moment he dashed otT through tho bushes whieh covered the unrrow beach botwoon the parapet nnd the sen. Though thinking his actions peculiar, I was sure that he wonld not remain in front of tho gun because ho had done so once when quite young nnd inexperi enced, and the burning grains of powder, Whieh are nlwnys thrown out by tho bluHt of a gun, had buried themselves in his hkin, burning him badly. He had novor forgotten this. Certain that he would take enre of himself, I paid no further nttniil ifti to him, but went with the others into the bombproof and took my place by the electric key ready to flro at tho com mand of the enptnin. Just as tho command "Fire I" was abont to bo given Bombshell reappeared on tho parapet and began to bark fu riously into tho very muzzle of the gun. I called to him, but he wonld not come. Annoyed at tho dolny of the test, I tried to catoh him, but oonld not do so. As I approached he retreated, still barking and apparently urging me to follow him. Finally, convinced from the dog's ac tions thnt something wns wrung, tho electric wire was disconnected from the gun, and I followed Bombshell, Wag ging his tail with joy at having accom plished his ohject, he led me through the underbrush to the beach. There, concealed behind a clump of bushes, wore two little children quietly digging in the sand and entirely uncon scious of the danger in which they hml been. Lieutenant John O. W. Brooks in St. Nioholas. The Gnlf fttrenm. Beniarking upon some of the geo. graphical charts now available to the student of physical science, it is pointed out by a writer that elsewhere in the world there is not so majostio a flow of water as the gulf stream, a remarkable body having ita headquarters iu the gulf of Mexico, from thence flowing northeasterly along the shores of the United States to the banks of New fonndland. Then, rushing aoross the Atlantic ocean to the British isles, it is divided into two currents, one flowing northward to the Atlantio ocean, the other southward to the Azores, and the velocity of this immense flow boing also more rapid than that of the Mississippi at New Orleans or even of the Amazon at 100 miles above its mouth. Phenom enal, too, is the fact that, although its bed and banks are cold water, yet the vast stream is very warm, and so great is the absence of affinity or coramin gling between these waters that their line of junction is distinctly visible to the eye. Further, the waters of this won derfnl stream do not In any part of their oonrse touch the bottom of the sea. They are defended at the bottom and sides by what has been termed a trough of cold water, one of the best nonconductors. Consequently very little heat is lost, and the warm water is oanied thou sands of miles, losing only four degrees of heat on the jonrney from the gulf of Mexico to the British isles. The Stage. I believe that if a pastor of a fashion able ohnrch were to denounoe any partic ular play as positively immoral it would very soon disappear from the stage. A very large percentage of the ordinary playgoers are oommunioants of the ohurohes, and a well considered oon damnation of a play wonld certainly in jure its popularity. "Christian people" would not think it "respectable" to sit through a play which had been con demued by their spiritual pastors. All that is needed m a little more minis terial conrage with regard to the stage, . and it will very soon be seen that the ; pulpit really possesses more power in this direction than it ever had In the history of the modern drama. One thing la certain if thestage is left to its own devioes, it will become a fruitful souroe of injury to the moral well being of the nation. Rev. Thomas P. Hughes in Fornm. FalnlM Execution. In Germany the view obtains that the execution of criminals should be by some means more certain even than the . eleotrie chair. Dr. E. Ctihmann, a cele brated .chemist, suggests the use of car bolic acid. According to his plan, the criminal wonld be carried to a cell, whloh can be filled noiselessly with car bolio aoid in gaseous form from floor to ceiling. When the gas reaches the de linquent's month and nose it causes in stant paralysis of the lungs and uncon sciousness, and life departs without pre vious pain. What person praises is perhaps a surer standard even than what be con demns of his oharaoter, Information and ' abilities. No wonder, then, that most people are so shy of praising anything. Hare. DIRECTED HER LETTER TO HEAVEN. ruthetle Little Stnry ot a Child's Epistle to Her Dead Mother. At a recent wedding the bride had retired to her dressing room to don her traveling gown. Hor mother had been dead a year or more, and she had had the constant care and companionship of her little sister ever since their al'il lo tion. The 7-year-old entered the room and went to her sister's chair very thonghtfnlly. Drawing a letter from the little pocket, she said ; "Alice, here is a letter to mamma. I have just written, telling her all about tho wedding. Will you send it to her?" The elder sister, a little shocked, re plied ns gently as possible that she couldn't send a letter to mother. IMien the little one, looking quite bright, said promptly : "Oh, yes, yon can, because now yon are married, you will be getting n little girl, nnd when yon send for her, just give the doctor this letter, and ho cau take it to mumuia when ho goes for the baby." Aud there on the envelope wns the address, printed as best she could: "To Mamma, Iu Heaven. Kindness of the Doctor." She took the letter, and hugged the little one to hide the tear which was rubbed off on tho curly, brown head. Washington Star. Bnmllpnx. The marks that smallpox leaves on the hands and face may be entirely pre vented by the simple expedient of hang ing red curtains round the patient's bed. This marvelous discovery wns made in the reign of Edward I by Dr. Gad desden, who from that timo hns been persistently ridiculed and laughed at by men of science to this day, notwith standing the fact that ho claimed to have effected many cures, notably that of Edward II himself when Prince of Wales. Ho ordorcd that the patient should be wrapped in scarlet cloth, and thnt the bed and furniture of his room should be painted in tho same color. This was the main cure, but he continued to treat tho patient in tho usnnl manner. It is only quite recently thnt it has been discovered thnt everything claimed for this simple remedy is porfeotly true. London Standnrd. Names Wanting. In names taken from trade, such as Aroher, Fisher, Brewster, Glover, etc, to be found in the London Directory, neither Banker, nor Soldior, nor Sailor ocours, but it must bo remembered that the first of these names is scarcoly as old as the days of the Stuarts, before wbioh time the Goldsmiths "kept run ning cashes" and acted as "bonquiers," for the word is one of modorn French importation. Soldier (solilat) also is of foreign and comparatively recent origin. The absence of Sailor is supplied, though very sparingly it must be owned, by Boatman and Boatwright, Shlpman and Shipwright. Bnt, then, it is only in comparatively modern times that we became a . sea loving people, and that "Britannia" began to "rule the waves. " Gentleman's Magazine. Odd ProTltlon For the Safety of Linen. "Do you know," said a prominent shipping man, "that it is a rule with the big transatlantic steamship com panies that the wife of the captain shall not travel in his ship? It's a fact. The company strongly prohibits its captains from taking their wives aboard with them. The supposition is that if any thing should happen to the ship the oaptain, instead ot attending to his pub lio duty, would devote his attention mainly to the sofoty of his wife. So that if the wife of a captain wants to go abroad she must take passage in some other vessel. This rule also holds in many of the freight lines. "Phila delphia Record.
