Some, men cheat themselves nut of happiness by an erraneotis notion that all the good In the world belong to the pant, and that the present Is a degener ate ago. Others rob themselves of much comfort by distrusting the future. An abiding faith in the Supreme Ruler, who is the same yesterday, to-day and forever, promotes health of body and peace of mind. Judge Mayer, who figured conspicu ously In the outrageous act of locking three score miners up in the Elk county jail because several men, who run Klk county, requested it, said at a recent term of court held in Ridgway: "I give notice right hero that I will rovoko tho license of any hotel or saloon In this county that allows card playing or maintains any slot machine or other gambling device In the building." The State school appropriation this year of 95.500,000 is an even half million dollars greater than it has, ever been, and tho warrents now In process of dis tribution to the 2DH6 districts in tho six-ty-sevon counties will provide means to Improvement in education, lengthening of the school term and increase in fa cilities of the most valuable and far reaching character. Pennsylvania ranks first in the country in the atten tion and support given to the public school system. That Idleness is a prolific cause of vico and crime is made clear by facts constantly coming under the observa tion of those who road the papers and study the condition of society. Here is a paragraph which has been widely cir culated: "Of the 1,000 men in the Eastern Penitentiary of Pennsylvania, only 10 were bred mechanics." All regulations which prevent young men from learning trades and securing em ployment as mechanics are vicious, and hould be abolished. Ono of the best preventives of crime would be a pro vision whoreby employment could be found by every man and idleness abso lutely prohibited. There was more "dirty work" and "mud slinging" engaged In during the Republican campaign before and at the primaries last Saturday than baa been -witnessed In this county for many years, If ever. One fellow over in West Reynoldsville who had taken money from both Bond and Weaver to work tor them, was in "hot wator" Saturday Afternoon when his true position had been discovered. The man did not know how to vote for a time. The fel low who take money from a candidate and promises to work for him and then receives money from this man's oppo nent and promises to work for him, has no more honesty than he knows what to do with. A story is told about an Elder in a Presbyterian church not far from Reyn oldsville that might lead some people to believe that an Elder has more worldly privileges on the Sabbath than even a worldly man. The country peo ple had driven to the church and were standing around exchanging friendly greeting while waiting for the hour of service to arrive. A man of the world asked an Elder If he would come to his place during the week and do some work for him. The Elder held up his hands in horror, and said: "This is no day to talk about such business! No day to talk about auoh business!" Be fore church commenced this same Elder had engaged one of the brethren to work - for him during the following week.' Much foolish talk has been indulged concerning vows and resolutions. Many intelligent people say they will not make vows or promises or resolutions for fear of breaking them, and so dis grace themselves; but they will go on and do the good things which are in their hearts without any resolutions. Perhaps it has not occurred to these honest people who are in moral dread of breaking their word that no one ever did a good thing alnoe man waa created without first resolving to do it. Good works are not wrought by accident. Whatever may be done without set pur pose and determination is not good. The vow may not be written with a pen or uttered with the voice, but It is reg istered within before any good ' and right thing is performed. A Warning, EmkRICKVIU.R, Pa., June 19, 1894. Editor Star: A little grove near our village is being made a Sabbath rendezvous by men from BrookvlllH and Roynoldsvillo. On Sunday morning a wagon is seen going in that direction, containing auspicious looking objects under a CAnvas. This Issoon followed by various vehicles, from the above named towns, filled with men. While in their retreat engaged In their revelry the ears of the pooplo who live within hear ing are made to tingle with profanity and obscenity with which they enter tain each other between drinks. After tho debauch Is ended women are insult ed and children frightened by these men as they drive their horses along the highway. Some of these are buslnoss men of the towns mentioned who would not like to see their names connected with such disgraceful proceedings. The citizens of our village earnestly protest against this turning of their Sabbath quiet into a pandemonium, and unless It is discontinued will take measures to bring tho offenders to justice. Citizen. Now that summer is here, tho weath er warm and the roods dusty, the ne cessity of plenty of watering troughs along tho public highways becomes more apparent. The law is that any person erecting or maintaining a public watering trough along any highway, easily aeeessible to horses orcnttlo, can, under a law of 1880, draw 95 a year from the county treasury. AU such troughs must bo confined to a length of road not less than five miles and to bo so con structed as to accommodate horses and cattle with safety for those in charge of them. No pay will be granted for mora than ono trough on a five mile length of road, though any person may erect a trough who chosos to do It as a public benefit. When this law is more generally understood there will be such troughs on every five miles of road In Pennsylvania. Ex. Among tho Interesting and amusing features at tho DuRois races July 3rd and 4th will be an "umbrella race." This race Is open to all comers. Each contestant must be provided with a good horse, an umbrella, cigar and matches. At the word esch ridor is to light bis cigar, mount his horse and raise his um brella bofore passing tho wire. The distance is a half mile. The umbrella must be kept up all around and cigar lighted. The first to moke the circle under these conditions and pass under the wire with umbrella up and cigar lighted wins first prize, 920; second, 95.00. This race is said to be ono of the most amusing sights ever witnessed on a race track. A Union Mule. A laughable thing happened down at the barracks to-day. A large wh'.te mule was hitched to a car loaded with provisions for the blacklegs. Re was evidently In sympathy with the outlde miners. Anyhow he would not budge an inch. Every device was resorted to, but the mule was firm, and the car had to be shoved across the track by hand. This is another evidence that the mule is a much abused animal, and deserves a better reputation than is generally ac corded him. Punxsutawnoy Spirit. In the Dauphin county court the other day Judge McPherson adopted the prac tice now in vogue in Lebanon county of requiring witnessos and jurors to swear by the uplifted hand rather than by kiss ing the bible. The habit of promiscuous kissing of the bible has been severely criticised by physioians who assert that disease is frequently spread by this prac tice. While the bible is invariably handed to the persons giving testlmoy In court, yet it is not compulsory that they should kiss the book, as they have the privilege of either affirming or swearing by the uplifted hand. It Is not generally known among the farmers of this State that thore Is a bounty offered tho tax payers for the planting and cultivation of shndo trees along the public highways. Tho law was passed in 1879, and says: "Any person liable to road tax, who shall transplant to the side of the public highway on his premises any fruit, shade trees or forest trees of suitable size, Bhall bo allowed by tho supervisor of roads, where roads run through or ad join cultivated land, in abatement of his road tax, 91 for every four trees set out; but no row of elms shall be placed near er than 70 feet, no row of maples or other forest trees nearer than 50 feet, except locusts, which may be 30 feet apart, and no allowance shall be mado, unless such treos shall have been set out tho year previous to the demand for such abatement of tax, and are liv ing and well protected from animals at tho timo of such demand." Punxsutawney has two printing offlo es to supply the demand for any print ing that may bo wanted tn their lino, yet every week our town Is canvassed by out of town printers. They go from shop to shop, from store to store, from office to office, and In their greediness to possess ths earth they make a house to house canvass for anything from a half dozen visiting cards up to any quantity of hand bills. For this privilege they pay no license, nor do they help to swell the Borough treasury by paying taxes. These printers come from Big Run, Mahaffey, Valler, Glen Campbell, Hun tingdon, Altoona, and it Is hard to tell Just how many other places, and by the tlmo they all get a whack at what little printing there I to do here, and what ought to go to the home offices, tho town Is left as dry as a beer keg after a fourth of July jubilee and then the home printers got what Is loft. The Punxsu tawney printers pay taxes and have all along respected the "profession" enough to let our more avaraclous and less con scientious neighbors alone. If our citi zens who want any printing done would remember that they have two offices at home and two papers that have all along stood by them and their Interests and tho town's Interests, and would give their printing to the home trade these leeches from theoutsido would get tired working the town and get nothing.
