A medical man who has given the mattor considerable attention says: "Looking at the physical development, health, symmotry of form, beauty, In crease, and perpetuity of the native American pooplo, It Is perfectly Bafo to say that tight dressing, as it Is practiced to-day 'among tho women Bnd girls of our country, is the greatest evil that exists. Seventy years ago, tight dress ing among women was principally con fined to the waist and the chest, but to day it is carried down as low as possible towards tho hips. Of late years we have had advertised, by the manufac turers or tholr agents, corsets for 'con tracting and elongating the waist,' and we see the sad results of tholr use in the duformod womon all around us." The Pennsylvania Tramp law pro ides that any tramp who enters a dwelling house against the permission of the ownor or even kindles a fire on road or on land of another, without the owner's consent, may, on conviction, be senienoeu to imprisonment. Any act rt ManMnnM mini, rl a nnlni, ttlmiit twir glng from place to place, is prima facie evidence that the offondor is a tramp, and he cannot escape as suoh unless he can prove by satisfactory evidence that ho does not make a practice of begging. A peculiarity of the Pennsylvania Tramp Act is the authority it gives to any person, an officer or otherwise, upon view of any offense described In the act, to arrest the offender and take him bo fore a magistrate. Every oltlzen and any number of citizens in the country are officers for the enforcement of this law. Boys are sometimes tempted to think that to be tender-hearted is to be weak and unmanly. Yet the tenderest heart may be associated with the strongest and most foroible mind and will. Take, for example, the story told of him to whom we owe our wonderful railway system. George Stephenson went one day into an upper room of his bouse, and closed the window. It had been open a long time booause of the great heat, but now the weather was becom ing ooolor, and so Mr. Stephenson thought It would be well to shut it. Ho little knew at the time whut he was doing. Two or three days afterward, however, ho chanced to obsorve a bird flyng against it with all its might again and again, as if trying to break it, His sympathy and curiouslty were aroused. What could the little thing want? He went at onoe to the room and opened the window to see. The win dow opened, the bird flow straight to one particular spot in the room, where Stephenson saw a nest. The poor bird looked at it, took the sad story in at a glance, and fluttered down to the floor, broken-hearted, almost dead. Stephen son, drawing near to look, was filled with unspeakable sorrow. There sat the mother bird, and under it four tiny little ones mother and young all apparently dead. Stophonson orled aloud. He tendorly lifted tho exhaust ed bird from the floor, the worm it had so long and so bravely struggled to bring to its home and young, still In Its beak, and carefully tried to revive It, but all bis effort proved in vain. It speedily died, and the great man mourn ed for many a day. At that time the force of George Stephenson's mind was changing the face of the earth, and was deeply grieved because he himself had unoonscloualy been the cause of death. The Colorado Excursion. Tho excursion to the Ban Luis Valley, which A. M. Row, of this place, is getting up for tho Denver A Rio Grande Railway, to leave Clearfield on Monday, May 28th, promises to be a great suc cess. The fare is Kift.ftS for the round trip from Clearfield to Alamosa, Colo rado, and return. This la so low that we cannot see how it can be done; but then that in none of our business, he says they will do it and that means that they will. We expect to soe a large number of persons avail themselves of so rare an offer. Not content with offering such a low fnro, they agree that west of Chicago tho party shall travel in elegant reclining chair cars without ex tra charge, going via Omaha and Den ver. The railroad people have selected, in Mr. Row, a man woll known for his good habits and sterling integrity. Prior to 18!H) ho was editor of the Jlaflnwm'f JiAirmtl, and is now the Clearfield Postmaster, and Is a safe and reliable man for both the company and tho public. Of course you must secure tickets in ad vanco, and therefore you should write Mr. Row at once and learn all about it. He has a plan whereby you can take tho trip and get back (40.00 of your money. "Laugh and, the world laughs with you, but weep and you weep alone." So sings the poet, but is it true? Only comparatively! There is a great deal of genuine sympathy in the world, and those who really deserve sympathy gen erally get it. It is natural, however, to look on the bright side of life and it is wisdom to cultivate and enjoy laughter. It is a good thing to sympathize with a friend in trouble, but it is much better if you can holp him to forget his sorrow and join you in laughter.
