PAGE SIX THE CITIZEN, WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 14, 19 12. THE PLAGUE OF FLIES "Swat the fly!" la .1 new national slogan that makes up In clllcloncy what It lacks In elegance. Newspa pers and magazines aro teaching It to the people. Photographic exhibits, moving pictures, and scientific ex periments aro being employed to drive It home. State and municipal authorities aro urging it upon their citizens. Evon tho pulpits ring with the new slocan " Swat tho llyl" Ono of tho ten plagues of Egypt has been upon us for years and wo have not realized It. Tho awful re sults havo been charged to other causes. It has been hard to Interest tho people seriously In so common place a thing as Hies. Tho llttlo pest has been a subject of banter and joke. It has collaborated with the baldhcadcd man in supplying tho professional humorist with material for mirth. At the worst It has aroused only tho lmpntlenco of ir ritable humanity. Wo have fished It from tho milk and dug it from tho butter. We havo shooed it, and laid all manner of traps for It, as an Inevitable part of tho summer rou tine, regarding It, the while, merely as something sent to annoy us and try our patience; for after all It was nothing but tho common, Insignifi cant house-fly. But scientists havo been busy in vestigating the formation and habits of the tiny creature, and suddenly they havo revealed facts which star tle tho world. No longer can the common house-fly bo treated -with in differenco or mere petulence. It must receive tho most serious and aggressive attention. It is a matter of life and death to thousands of men, women and children. This busy buzzing llttlo beast, tho common house-fly, is tho most dangerous and deadly wild animal in all tho world. More persons are killed by It very year than by all tho other poisonous Insects, all the snakes, and all tho beasts of prey combined. Moro persons fall victims each year to tho common house-fly than are killed on all tho fields of battle throughout tho world. Capture one of tho most Insigni ficant looking flies buzzing around your baby's head as sho lies sleep ing, put tho fly under a microscope, and at once its character Is revealed. You can hardly refrain from start ing back In horror at the thought that your baby Is constantly being attacked by so terrible a, beast. Each foot of tho fly ia covered with claws and llttlo stick hairs. You have seen many times how tho fly is continually rubbing his feet to gether. Ho does this to scrape off everything that adheres to his feet and legs. These sticky feet are loaded with germs and microbes deadlier than bullets, and the fly industriously wipes them off on your baby's face or on your food. Flies feed on filth. They flourish only whero refuse or filth of some kind exists. They bring typhoid germs from sewage and deposit them In the home. But tho little temptations, tho llttlo deceits, the llttlo meannesses como swarming into our homes like tho poison-bearing flies, and tho germs of sin they bring eat into tho character with deadly effect. A malicious bit of gossip told In an easy way about some absent friend or neighbor Is laden with poison for tho mind. Bzz-zz-zz! Swat tho fly!
