Greatness really consists In doing great deeds with little moans In tho accomplishment of vast purposes; from tho private ranks of life In honcfltlng one's own community, in blessing one's own city, tho commun ity In which ho dwells. There, and there only, is tho great test of human goodness and human ability. IHo who waits for an olllco before he does groat and noble deeds must fall altogether Russell iHcrrmau Conwoll. WHOM DO YOIT PHKFKR? Republican voters of Wayne county! You who favor the nomination of Theodore Roosevolt, you who favor tho nomination of William H. Taft, and you who favor tho nomination of a dark horse. The situation to-day is this. Tho possibility of the nomina tion of Roosevelt at Chicago is fast waning. His best friends and warmest supporters are conrcding his defeat. Tho candidacy and failure of Roose Telt will seriously interfere with tho chances of Taft, or endanger his suc cess at tho polls if he is nominated. Tho nomination of LaFollette or Cummins is out of tho question. The convention at Chicago will bo called upon to exercise such wisdom and judgment In tho matter of nomina tions as few conventions have been called upon to exercise since Lincoln's time. In this emergency whom do you prefer to have represent you at Chicago? Do you profer to have two citizens of Bradford and Wyoming counties, wliom you do not know, and who have pledged themselves to go down with Roosevelt? Or do you prefer a man liko Homer Greene whom you have known all his life, whom everybody knows, on whoso judgment and party loyalty you have learned to depend, and who is unpledged and bound only to act for your interests and those of your party? And If you do not know Mr. Greene's running-mate, John iR. Codding, let us as sure you that he has the same standing In his county of Bradford as a wise, loyal and popular Republican that Mr. Greene has here. To ask' your preference with these two men in the field as candidates should be virtually to state It In their favor. And bear In mind also that by sending Dr. L. P. Cooke and William F. 'Riefler as your delegates to tho state convention, you thereby help elect twelve more national delegates who will represent tho state at large, and who will go to Chicago as Mr. Greene and Mr. Cod ding will go, not pledged to further tho ambition of. any man, 'but to rep resent the Republican voters of Pennsylvania in the interest of all tho -people. THE COLLAPSE OF THE ROOSEVELT DOOM. It is in some respects pathetic to note ihe failure of Col. Roosevelt to win the large measure of support ho had expected In the 'Republican par ty. It Is still more pathetic to note how public sentiment is falling away from him day by day, with ever Increasing rapidity. It Is not long since ho was tho most commanding figure In American politics and life. It is not so long since he could point to a record, marred indeed by some inex cusablo blunders, but on the whole a record rarely exceeded by American presidents. Now all this is changed. Instead of resting on his laurels he lias chosen to descend into the political maelstrom. That ho Is being buffeted rudely about is no fault of tho American people. He himself has Invited criticism, ridicule and disaster. Ills ambition to be named at Chi cago and to be again president of tho Unted States is foredoomed to de feat. His later speeches indicate that he already foresees his certain fate. It is an inglorious and pathetic ending to a brillant career. "Whom the gods would destroy they first make mad." Had Roosevelt not promulgat ed his famous and destructive theory of recalls, had he held himself with dignity beyond the limit of personal political ambition, he would still be, as In the past, the Idol of the American people. As it Is, his boom has collapsed, his prestige Is gone, his fame Is clouded, his day has departed. " How are tho mighty fallen!" WE, THE PEOPLE. On a certain historical occasion the Three Tailors of Tooley Street addressed a petition to the British Parliament beginning: " We, tho People." We are reminded of this famous incident by tho declaration said to "have been made here last week by E. R. W. Searle, a Scranton lawyer, to tho effect that he and two othor men had organized this country for Roose velt that Hie people might rule. This Mr. Searle do not confuse him with Judge A. T. Searle, they are not related to each other had been, until about a year ago, clerk of tho United States Courts at Scranton. Hie had held the job since tho organization of the Middle Dlsrlct, a dozen years ago or thereabouts. It was a fat job financially. For reasons best known to the Government authorities Mr. Searle was replaced by his deputy John C. Scheuor. Since that time President Taft, Senator Penrose, Governor Toner, State Treasurer Wright, and other Republican officials have been persona non grata to Mr. Searle. But the re-entrance of Col. Roosevelt into politics offered an outlet for his undeniable political talent. Acting under the auspices of the Roosevelt campaign committee, ho became, according to his own account of it, chief organizer for northeastern Pennsylvania. Some three or four weeks ago ho came into Wayne county and presented to leading Republicans here, one by one, the Roosevelt propaganda. Tho, results do not seem to have been particularly encourag ing; the only apparent effect of his two days' work having been the en trance of Messrs. Samson and 'Crossley Into tho field as candidates for del egates to the state convention. Be that as it may, Mr. Searle claims credit, not alone for arousing, but also for organizing the Roosevelt sentiment in Wayne county. Since his first visit above mentioned ho has been hero but onco to see how his campaign Is progressing, and he Is re ported to have been deeply discouraged over the situation. It was doubt less easy enough for Mr. Searle and tho two other gentlemen to set up tho Roosevelt banner In Wayne county and proclaim themselves as "tho people," but the rank and file or the Republican voters do not seem to have acknowledged tho authority and leadership of tho gentleman from Scranton. Possibly these old-fashioned and out-of-dato Wayno counteans prefer to uso their own judgment about whose presidential standard they shall rally to. A boom that was born and nursed In Oyster Bay, cradled in tho cowboy states of tho far west, and brought to Wayno county by tho distinguished gentleman from Scranton, does not come bearing such ear-marks of spontaneous popularity that the conservative and far-uighted Republicans of Wayno county are likely to grow wild with enthusiasm con cerning it. Mr. Searle Is engaged in what Is doubtless a pleasant and profitable employment, but it Is quite certain that he will not carry tho dolegates from Wayne county to tho state convention in his capacious pockets. FAVORS THEODORE ROOSKVEIP FOR PRESIDENT. Thesabove Is tho declaration which will appear on tho primary bal lots after tho names of Messrs. Lewis and Stephens, candidates for dole gates to therfiatlonal convention, and Messrs. Samson and Crossley, can didates for delegates to tho state convention. it will bo placed there at their written request without objection on tho part of their Republican oppononts. It Is now conceded by some of Col. Roosevelt's principal supportors openly, and by most of them privately, that ho cannot bo nominated. It Is also conceded that ho will not with draw, but will go down fighting. Suppose the gentlemen above named mould bo olected as delegates to tho several conventions. In what a far cical position they would be placed! Unable, with honor, to do aught olso but support and vote for Roosevelt to tho last, unable to have any hand or part In what we now predict will be tho splendid outcome pf tho National "Republican convention, they will return to their homes, having been of no benefit to their candidate, to their party, or to themselves. Tho unfortun ate declaration after their names on tho ballot will havo been tho causo of their utter uselessness. But why speculate on what now appears to bo Impossible. Tho very fact of this declaration on tho ballot Is certain to lead to their defeat. Tho bulk of tho Republicans of Wayno county nover havo wanted Roosevelt for a third term, and of those who havo horotoforo favored his candid acy, few will care to bo Identified with a losing causo. Tho ballot declara tion that appeared to the Roosovelt candidates a few weeks ago to bo tho logan of victory, Is destined to bo Instead the epitaph of dofeat. INSULTING YOUNG REPUBLICANS. Under tho above heading tho Independent prints a lottor Blgned "Young Republican," , In which It is intimated that someone has been saying uncomplimentary things about Messrs. Samson and Crossley, tho Roosevolt candidates for delegates to the stato convention. If this Is true It is to bo regretted. There is no occasion for unpleas ant personalities. While Tho Citizen emphatically dlBsents from tho single-plank platforni on which theso young men aro standing as candidates, it recognizes their right to bo stand, and It has accorded and will accord to thorn absolutely fair treatment. They havo not been and will not be Insulted In those tolumns. We very much doubt whether any ono has in sulted them, and whether there Is tho slightest justification for the hyster ical headline ndoptod by tho Independent In printing tho lottor. Thoy havo dtlubtleBs been led to ibollovd that tho dotnand for Roosovelt Is genu lno and wldo-fiprcnd, that his causo Is a Just ono, that his ambition Is un selfish, and that they will bo doing him and Uio public a sorvce ifoy sup porting his clnlm In tho state convention. Of course thoy will ovohtually bo undeceived. Thoy havo enlisted on tho sido of n losing pauso. When Roosovelt mndo his dramatic entry as a candldnto ho had reached tho cli max of his political popularity. Every day slnco then has shown a falling oft In his support nnd a marked deterioration In his own attitude boforo tho public. Tho unfortunate thing about It la that by tho tlmo tho stnto convention meets, tho Roosovelt following will bo so Insignificant, nnd tho possibility of his receiving a prcsldontal nomination so extremely remote, that his Wayno county candidates, If they should chanco to bo elected, will find themselves In n helpless and most humiliating position. In tho mcautlmo no one has Insulted -them, nnd we do not bollovo that any ono Intends to Insult thorn, least of all any thinking Republican. Tho Citizen believes thoy will not bo elected but they havo a perfect right to run. REPUBLICAN CANDIDATE FOR REPRESENTATIVE FRED C. REICH ENBACKER Honesdolc, Pn. Mr. Reichenbacker was born In Honesdale, Pa., in 18C4, and was educated in tho Honesdale schools and learned tho druggist's business and has followed the business for 27 consecutive years.
