Dosortod a Small American Force on tho Island of Oobula. AMBUSHED IN A NABBOW PATH. IVIicn (hp Iti-heU Opened Fire tlit Olio Hillulrril find Sixty Nntlvrs l'lp.l, I.rnvliiK the I.Ktli- I'nrtr ' Ainprleniia la Ilenr the Attack. Manila, Dec. 20. Delated mall re ports have reached Manlln of an ex pedition on tho Island of Cebula last month by a small force of American soldiers of tho Sixth Infantry, which was repulsed by insurgents, mainly owing to tho desertion of the native nllloa, upon whom the Americans de- dended. Two of the Americans were killed and two wounded and In the force of native pollco accompanying them one was killed and four wounded. No official report of tho nffalr has reached General Otis and consequently tho censor refused to permit the In cident to be cablod, but a press corre spondent has obtained nn account from a thoroughly reliable source. The American commander at head quarters In tho town of Cebu received nformatlon that a force of insurgents had occupied the village of Maulbaul, on the west coast of the Island, that thoy were levying hoavy taxes and tak ing food and horses, and that the vil lagers would be glad to havo them driven away. Captain walker took a detachment of ten soldiers aboard the steam launch Powerful on the 14th of October and proceeded along the coast, stopping at the towns of Naga and Carcal, where ten men were ndded to the force from each garrison. At the latter town a body of 160 na tive policemen, who were friendly to tho Americans, were mustered Into the service by their captain, Senor MeJIa. These natives were armed with spears and bolos, and had but a few guns. On the ovenlng of the 13th the Powerful reached Maulbaul and her passengers were landed with difficulty through a rough sea. The Insurgents had re treated to the hills, so the force camp ed for the night. Early In the morn ing they were on the march. The Company C detachment acted as ad vance guard and the natives brought up In the rear, Just MS they entered a narrow rocky pass, marching two abreast, there was great explosion almost In their faces and they were covered with a shower of soft earth. The. Insurgents had prepared a gunpowder mine to an nihilate the party, but the soil and the rocks were so powdery that the Amer icans suffered no Injuries beyond bruises. Immediately after the report Fili pinos In tho cliffs opened Are. Two Americans and Ave natives fell at the first volley, which came from very short range. The- police were thrown Into confusion, and after a momenta hesitation they fell back and began to run, leaving the few Americans to bear the attack. This the men of the Sixth did bravely. They rallied In order, carrying their dead and wound ed and returning the insurgent flre with such effect that 18 of the enemy were killed. The party returned to Maulbaul and re-embarked for Cebu, where they arrived the following day with their dead and wounded. A Night of Terror. He was walking along the firing line, was shot In the breast and died Immediately. General Iawtou left home Monday night, having returned from his nortli- trni operations Saturday, to lead an ex pedition through Marlqulna ralley, which has lieen an Insurgent strong hold throughout the war. The valley has several times been Invaded, but never held by the Americans. General Geronlmo was supposed to have there the largest organized force north of Manila, and General Otis wished to garrison Marlqulna. The night was one of the worst of the season. A ter rific rain had begun and is stilt contin uing. Accompanied by his staff and Troop I, Fourth cavalry. General l.awton set out nt 9 o'clock In advance of the main force, consisting of the Eleventh cav alry and one battalion each of the Twentieth and Twenty-seven'h, which started from I .a Loma at midnight. With a small escort ho led tho way through an almost pathless country, a distance of 15 miles, over hills and through canebrake and deep mud, the horses climbing the rocks and sliding down the hills. Before daybreak the command had reached tho head of the valley. San Mateo was attacked at 8 o clock. and a three hours right ensued. This resulted In but few casualties on the THE LATE GENERAL LAWTON American side, apart from the death of General Lawton, but tho attack was difllcult because of the natural defenses of tho town. General Lawton was walking along the firing line, within 300 yards of a small sharpsuooters trench, consplcu ous In tho big, white helmet he always wore, and a light yellow rain coat. He was also easily distinguishable because of his commanding stature. The sharp shooters directed several close shots, which clipped the grass near. His staff officers called General Lawton's atten tion to the danger he was in, but he only laughed with his usual contempt (or bullets. guddsnly lie excialmed "I am shot,' clenched his hands In a desperate ef fort to stnnd erect, and fell into the arms of a staff officer. Orderlies rush ed across the field lor surgeons, who dashed up Immediately, but their ef forts were useless. The body was taken to a clump of hushes and laid upon a stretcher, the familiar white helmet covering the face of the dead general, Almost at this moment the cheers of the American troops rushing Into San Mateo were mingled with the rifle vol' leys. After the fight six stalwart cavalry' men forded tho river to tho town, car rylng the litter on their shoulders, the staff preceding with the colors, and a cavalry escort following. The troops filed bareheaded through the building where the body was laid, and many a tear fell from the eyes of men who had long followed the Intrepid Lawton. The entire command was rtrlcken with grief as though each man had suffered a personal loss. Owing to the condition of the coun try, which Is Impassabie so far ns vehicles are concerned, the remains could not ho brought to Manila yester day, Mrs. Lawton and tho children are living In a government residence formerly occupied by a Spanish gen eral. San Mateo lies between a high mountnln benlnd and a broad shallow stream In front, with white sand bars, which the Insurgent trenches and tha buildings command. The Americana were compelled to ford the river under fire, U was while they were lying In the rice nplds and volleying across pre paratory to passing the stream that General Lawton was shot. All except the officers were behind cover. A staff pfflcpr waa wounded about the same time, and one other officer and seven nen wore wounded. After three hours' uhootlr.g tho Fill- pinos were dispersed Into the moun. tains. Colonel Lockott toon command when ueneral Lawton fell.
