It is the geueral impression that District Attorney-elect McLouglilin has a very weak cabinet. Stick a pin here : Commissioners elect Kantner and Keber will organize the new board on a llepublican basis. That is settled. Congressman SlBLKY has spoken, acknowledging the error of his way. And still the "oalamity howling" edi tors of the free silver persuasion are as silent as the grave ! . Thomas Bolin, one of the Demo- cratio wheel-horses of the Fifth ward, and who has done loyal work for the warty, is invariably turned down when the loaves and fishes are dl- vided. We acknowledge the receipt of President McKinley's annual mes sage to Congress at the beginning of the first session of the Fifty-sixth Congress, in pamphlet form, sent through the courtesy of Congressman Kyau. Tub small record of business fail ures throughout the United States continues to annoy the spirits of those who would seem to prefer seeing business depression and pauic under n Republican administration than prosperity and activity, even though they themselves share in it, The failures for the week ending De cember 2, 1899, according to Dun's Review, were only 144, as against 281 for the by no means unprosperous corresponding week of 1898. The Senate Reorganization. It seems that some rather interest ing politics are being played at Wash ington these days. For the first time in over six years the Senate of the United States has a clear Republican majority. It was natural to suppose therefore.that a reorganization would be an early duty of the Republican members, the Senate being in no manner a civil service body, and that the Democrats, who held the major ity of the offices, would be replaced by Republicans. The offices of Secretary and Ser- geant-at-Arms are important and high-salaried positions and carry with them a number of other good officer. ranging front $2,500 per annum down These places are now filled by good loyal Demoorats, some of them of the free silver stripe, and ultra partisan. It transpires, however, that there is a number, quite a number of promi nent Republican Senators and the publication of their names would come as a considerable surprise to their constituents who think that, in view of the "efficiency" of the present Democratic officials, it would be the best course to do away with any reorganization. It matters not that when the Demo crats came into power in 1893, they made, within thirty days, as shown by the official printed report of the Secretary of the Senate, practically a "clean sweep" of Republicans and that a very large proportion of these men were old soldiers, one-legged or one-armed, who had been given posi tions as messengers and door-keepers because of their disabilities incurred In fighting for the Union. Just what is the object of these Re publican Senators who desire the re tention of free silver Democratic offi cials it is difficult to understand, but they are hearing from day to day, in no uncertain tones, what their sup porters at home think of suoh action. Crippled by Rheumatism. Those who have Rheumatism find themselves growing steadily worse all the while. One reason of this is that the remedies prescribed by the doctors contain mercury and potash, which ul timately intensify the disease by caus ing the Joints to swell and stiffen, producing a severe aching of the bones.
