Ay Insurgent in Luzon can get $30 for hts gun by turning it over to the United States authorities and engag ing at once in some peaceful industry. There is no impropriety in callingthls benevolent assimilation. Last year the Transvaal gold mines and Kimbarley diamond mines yielded $125,000,000, or just about what the advance in cotton will net Southern producers. Is this a speci men of the "sham prosperity" the Democratic editors talked about ? It is a singular circumstance that the number of deaths among the country's Vice Presidents lias largely exceeded that among its Presidents. While four men holding the higher office died during their term, the deaths in two of these instances Lincoln and Garfield were caused by violence. Six men holding the second office, however, died during their term, and all of them by natural causes. Moreover, the Presi dents, on the average, have been, when taking office, more advanced in years than the Vice Presidents. Christmas is Coming. The dreams of childhood ore tak ing shape in all the stores and shop windows of town, and in two weeks more it will be the great holiday that is hailed with so much joy by Christ endom. Already the shopping inci dent to this festal time has begun, and Santa Claus, who never forgets good little boys and girls at this sea son, is packing up his treasures for his annual trip among the young friends who are to be gluddened by the bounty of this ancient lover of children. Santa Claus is a shrewd old gentle man, and has learned wisdom by his experience of former years. He knows that it is best, at such a time us this, not to wait for the rush and feverish excitement of the last few days before Christmas, as some per sons foolishly do, and so he is buying his wares quietly now, while he has time for calm reflection, and when he will receive that amount of atten tion from the urbane storekeepers, which they will not be able to bestow upon him later on. It would be well for shoppers generally to follow the example of Santa Claus and make their holiday purchases as early as possible. In years gone by, the holiday shop ping in the majority of cases was put off until a day or two" before Christ mas, and the result was much un comfortable crowding of customers and clerks, long hours of rushing ex citement and anxiety on the part of dealers, and occasionally some little dissatisfaction on the part of pur chasers at being unable to obtain what they wanted at the very last moment. The indications all point to a busy holiday season in Shenandoah this year, and the liberal purohases made by all the dealers is evidence of the fact that they expect a brisk business. It will add much to the comfort of all concerned if as many as possibly ran do so will make their holiday purchases as early as they con veniently can before the great rush of the ChrlstmaBtide trade sets in. It Is gratifying to find that there is promise of a cheerful Christmas in Shenandoah and elsewhere this year, and that in many homes the genial and happy influences which seem to bring earth and heaven nearer usually at this season, will be felt and fully appreciated by old and young. The house will devote the week entirely to tho financial debate on the currency bill. The vote will not be taken until next Monday. The debate will probably cover a wide range, Including a gen eral re-threshing of the campaign Is sue of lSOii. and there may be some stormy Incidents. The Republicans are arrayed solidly for the bill, but many of them who have never before advoepjr-d tfce gold standard doubtless will have to take the floor to explain their change of position. On the Dem ocratic side some of the members are reported as favoring the bill, but there has been no canvass made as yet, and It remains to be seen how many of them will join the Republicans upon this measure. Representative Over street, of Indiana, who will have charge of the bill on the floor, makes the opening argument In Its support. The week does not promise to be a busy one In the senate, the Indications being Iff routine business and short sessions inside the chamber, with much preparation for future work In the committee rooms. Senator Mason will open the week with a speech on his resolution declaring the sympathy of this country with the Doers In their war with Great Britain. There may be other brief speeches upon this and other questions, though there Is a gen eral disposition on the part of sen ators to postpone speech making until after the holidays.
