The Coal Famine. The coal famine, which was ilrst felt three months ago throughout the country, has attained alarming pro portions, and the prospects are that conditions will grow worse Instead of better The railroads are doing their best to move the coal that is mined, but they lack the necessary cars, and the famiue is scarcely even miti gated. All over the United States furnaces with gaping jaws are swollowing coal as fast as it cuu be shoyelled into them, and then they gasp for more, until they die out and lie cold because there isn't enough to keep them going. The storv of the current coal famine is the old story on which the changes liavo been rung for months past too much prosperity, too heavy demands upon the manufacturing resources of the country ; prospects of immense profits in sight and not enough power to grasp them at once. One year ago there were but eight furnaces in blast for the manufacture of iron and steel. To-day, in Pennsylvania and the states adjoining, there are ninety-four of them. This country is supplying the world -with iron and steel, and the coal to make the product lias to be had at any price. But the blast furnaces find themselves in fierce competition with hundreds of other industries, and the whole strength of the general clamor is hurled against the railroads that have not the cars and the motive power to transport the coal which the mines are turning out as fast as lies in their power. It is rumored that there are now from 2,500 to 3,000 gondola cars carry ing ore from the Lakes, which will be brought in to relieve the situation as soon as the lakes freeze up. But this is rumor merely. The drain on bi tuminous coal has been transferred to the anthracite supply, and it is thought the private consumer will shortly find that prices for domestic grades will jump to unheard of figures. Among the developments which have occurred in the larger area of general trade and manufacture, with the growth of the coal famine, are these ; Transatlantic steamers, carrying the mails, both from Philadelphia and from New York, have been de tained from six to ten hours because it was impossible for them to 'get blinker coal, which comes from the Clearfield regions. All New England is out of coal, and New York is paying almost any price for the bituminous variety, .Steamers sailing from New York have paid as high as $2.50 per ton, without freights, at the mines for coal which sold three months ago for 05 cents. Throughout Kensington, near Philadelphia.countless mills that can not secure bituminous coal have been compelled to carry on their work with prepared sizes of anthraoite. The Baldwin Locomotive Works closed for two days lust week, and Is now bo short of coal that the men are on half time. The Phoenix Iron Works were closed down for the OVER A M ILLION PEOPLE ARE USING JOHNSON'S KIDNEY PILLS FOR KIDNEY TROUBLES tamt Dackfttres of Tohn on' Kidney Mill have teen sold. The last Filipino council of war was held by the retreating leaders at Uay ombong on Nov. 13, In the house now occupied by General MacArtl'- ' . It was attended by Agmunldo. j del Pilar, Garcia, Alojandrlno and some members of the so-called cabinet. In formation has reached General Mac Arthur from several sources to the ef fect that the council recognized the futility of attempting furthei resist ance to tho Americans with united forces, and agreed that the Filipino troops should scnttor and should here after follow guerrilla methods. Report 8 of umbuscados and skirm ishes' come from every section of tho country along the railroads. Those districts seem to be filled with smill bands. Saturday four men of Com pany D, Ninth infantry, were foraging beyond Uamban, when 20 Filipinos took them in ambush, killing one and capturing the other three. The Amer icans resisted for half an hour. The firing being heard at Bamban, Lieu tenant Frazc -. with a squad, followed the retreating Filipinos several miles. The Americans found the body of a soldier boloed. They burned the hum let where the fight took place. Throe Filipino riflemen ambushed rm American surgeon near Capas. He shot one and the others lied. Between Bamban aril Angeles a mule train was Hied upon by the Insur gents, and a Spaniard, a former pris oner of the Filipinos, who was with the train, was shot. At Mlasiqui the officials who welcomed the Americans wero murdered. This was the only railroad town which the Americans did not garrison, and on tho night the troops withdrew a band of Insurgents entered, dragged Antonio Mcjia, presi dent of the town. Into the street and cut his throat. The murderers then assassinated the vice president and live members of the town council in the same manner and told the fright ened natives who witnessed thoslaugh ter to spread the news that a similar fate awaited all friends of the Ameri cans. The mayor of San Carlos, who rode in the carriage with General MacAr thur and Colonel Bell when the Amer icana entered the town, amid the cheers of the people, was murdered the next night. Military activity continues In every section. Colonel Bell's regiment has ndvanred from Bayombong upon Mau gatarem, where It Is supposed there is a large Insurgent force. "Two battal ions of the newly arrived Twenty' eighth infantry have been sent by cas coes to Bacoor, to reinforce the south line. Major Spcnce, with 50 men of the Thirty-third regiment, surrounded a village near Bautiston during the night and attacked the place at daybreak, capturing a Filipino caplaln and 15 men, with seven rifles. The latest news from General Toung Is that there are ten cavalry men and 200 Maccabebes with him, most of the horsemen who started hav ing been compelled to drop out because their horses failed them.
